Former top Pentagon officials warn of "extreme strain" on civilian-military relations

The U.S. is experiencing an "exceptionally challenging" environment for the relationship between military and civilian parts of society, a large group of former Pentagon leaders warned in an open letter published Tuesday.

Why it matters: The letter, which cited political polarization and other social changes, was signed by eight former defense secretaries and five former Joint Chiefs chairmen from both Republican and Democratic administrations.

Among the signatories were two of former President Trump's defense secretaries, Jim Mattis and Mark Esper.

Who would ever believe the Vindman brothers, despite wearing U.S. military officers' uniforms, represented anyone other than themselves and the Ukrainian crime syndicate the Democrats were running over there?

Forget Jao Bai-din, the senile fool pretending to be Commander-In-Chief. Who in the U.S. military would ever leave billions of dollars of weapons for the Taliban in Afghanistan?

Who would ever trust anyone in the military that allowed the Kenyan usurper to sit as President despite being a foreigner? Who would trust anyone in the military who allowed a repeat four years later with Kamala Harris sitting as vice president?

Thanks. I read it, and the wording seems unnecessarily ambiguous to me. Intentionally, I suppose!

I respect Marines. If they have their views, I respect their views even if I disagree, because they have earned that right as far as I am concerned. And I have mine.

I was a great admirer of Mattis, and was thrilled when he was selected for SecDef.

But he was all for open homosexuality in the military. Then he worked against Trump, which to me, is a cardinal sin for someone in his position.

You follow orders as SecDef.

Doesn’t mean you don’t speak your mind to your boss. And if your views are incompatible and you have to act contrary to your principles, you resign, you don’t sabotage.

I had a lot of respect for him, and I lost it all. All of it.

“ Doesn’t mean you don’t speak your mind to your boss.”

Nothing makes me as sick as this kind of lukewarm ignorant statement

He voiced his disagreement with the CIC as a subordinate to the world.

You make me sick

Really? I think you misunderstand my statement.

I am in no way supporting his voicing his disagreement as a subordinate to the world. Not sure how you got that.

Did my statement not say EXACTLY “Doesn’t mean you don’t speak your mind to your boss”?

That means exactly what it says. You speak your mind to the boss. It DOES NOT mean you go outside your chain of command.

As a subordinate, my whole life, both in and out of the military, is that I speak my mind and render my honest opinions to those above me, and experience has shown me that any boss worth his salt values that.

I thought I was wholly clear that I lost ALL respect for Mattis when he did that.

And I would have had a whole lot less respect for him if he DID NOT speak his honest mind directly to his boss, which was Trump.

I do not believe you understood my post, and I don’t think my post was unclear.

“Doesn’t mean you don’t speak your mind to your boss”?

You’re pretending that was what this was about.

That’s disgusting

Okay. One more time. Explain to me exactly why my post is so disgusting and oftensive. I was NOT talking about this open letter which I also disagree with.

I was taking about his time as SecDef.

I did not even opine on this current issue, which if I would disagree with his actions as SecDef, I would surely disagree with now with this.

I am not sure what your issue is with my post. Can you explain?

“Bletch”?

This is apparently your idea of civil discourse.

Fine.

If that is all you have to offer, and it appears it is, you are either drunk or stupid, and in either case, you are an ignorant jackass with his head up his ass whose opinion on military affairs isn’t worth a cup of warm spit.

And I am probably being generous in assessing you as drunk or stupid.

Being in the military in the 50’s was fun. When in uniform we had certain privileges i.e. travel and attend theater at half cost. Girls always smiled at us G.I’s. I always traveled in my Ike jacket. Traveled by Greyhound from Chicago to Tacomah, WA. Somewhere in Idaho a pretty girl sat hext to me. I fell asleep with my head against her shoulder and awoke with my head in her lap. Excused myself profusely and begged her not to leave the bus but ride with me till Tacomah(I was on my way to McCord AFB)She said she had to get off but I held her hand and turned on my foreign accent. I had immigrated a year earlier. To make a long story short — last year we celebrated our 60th Anniversary. No medals, no citations, no hero. I made it to buck-sergeant Most daring thing I did in life was preventing this girl to get off the bus. I do not fit in my Ike jacket any more but I still spit-shine my shoes and tell her not to get off the bus. Stay babe, I’ll make it worth your while.
