A teacher in Ireland has been suspended from work and then jailed for contempt of court after he refused to use the correct pronouns to address a transgender student.
Enoch Burke was arrested on Monday for violating a court order barring him from teaching at Wilson’s Hospital School in Westmeath, or even being present there, the news site RTE.ie reported.
Judge Michael Quinn found Burke guilty of violating an order made by the High Court last week and sent him to Mountjoy Prison, where he will remain until he either purges his contempt, or until further order from the court.
The teacher remained defiant in the face of jail time, telling the judge that “it is insanity” that he will be led out of the courtroom and taken to prison for refusing to give up his Christian beliefs.
“I love my school, with its motto Res Non Verba, actions not words, but I am here today because I said I would not call a boy a girl,” Burke told the court.
The scandal surrounding Burke began unfolding after the educator, who teaches history, politics and German at the school in Multyfarnham, County Westmeath, refused to address a transitioning student as “they” instead of “he.”
Burke’s stance prompted school officials to place him on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of a disciplinary process.
But the teacher refused to stay away from campus, despite an injunction that was issued barring him from going to the school, or attempting to teach.
On Friday, the judge issued an order to arrest Burke after he was found sitting in an empty classroom at the school.

A bit of a misleading headline IMO.
He wasn’t jailed for refusing to use certain words, he was jailed for violating an injuction to stay away from the school.
In Russia, he would have been arrested for NOT using the true pronouns.
There’s some kid up this way who sits in class and identifies as a tree. The teacher is forced to play along. When did adults get so friggin’ stupid? I would have just told her that if she’s a tree, she needs to stand out in the school yard and provide shade. No trees in the classroom.
Actual Communist countries don’t have this problem. China, North Korea, Russia, Cuba, Venezuela, Vietnam, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Nicaragua, ect. This doesn’t happen there. Same goes for Islamic countries.
We’ve become an insane asylum, with the inmates in charge.
Makes me want to root for Russia more and more because of crap like this. Bad as they are, at least they’re still somewhat grounded in reality.
The NY Post is overall a great paper, but they only care about clicks. Their headlines are usually flat-out lies meant to get a click and that’s it. This one is no different.

“IRA?” They were communists. So in a sense they won. Jailing guys like this is what they fought for.
True but he was on paid administrative leave.....maybe shoulda cut his losses and let it play out.
I give much respect for his convictions though.
One would think they might be offended by these actions in any case. But, you are correct about their political bent. Maybe bono and “u2” can make up a new song about jailing gender non complying folks. 🤔👍

I doubt they are offended by this. Communists aren’t tribalists so defending non-communists is never on the table.
This is the ‘slippery slope’ we tried to warn everyone about.
‘Acceptance’ became MANDATORY... or else.
