An unprecedented rise in food and energy costs compounded by the climate crisis is resulting in a perfect storm for civil unrest in more than 100 countries, according to newly released analysis.

Popular anger at cost-of-living crises has seen the Sri Lankan government toppled, protests in Argentina and rising discontent in Europe.

The report, produced by risk analysis firm Verisk Maplecroft, warns that political turmoil in the next 12 months is set to increase, with over 80 percent of countries experiencing inflation above six percent and the prospect of repressive measures being used to quell dissent likely.

Countries in the Middle East and North Africa are particularly exposed to these rising threats, with three of the top 10 most at-risk being from the region.

'Across the region, political leaders will be acutely aware that this spike played an important part in the wave of uprisings during the Arab Spring'

- Torbjorn Soltvedt, principal analyst

Egypt, Lebanon and Tunisia were already in the throes of an economic and political crisis before the latest shock, which resulted from Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February this year.

Throughout history there have been two stable forms of government, either a powerful king or a collection of powerful barons. E.g. Charlemagne or the English Barons who extracted the Magna Carta from the king.

In the modern context, for countries with a high degree of social stress this equates to an autocratic dictator or to a collection of warlords. E.g. North Korea or Somalia.

When gasoline prices started to fall some here in the US, the first explanation I read was the falling demand for gasoline in poorer nations. Pakistan and India were mentioned.

I’d bet falling demand for gasoline in many nations is most of the explanation, and Brandon’s foolish release of crude from our strategic reserves has little to with it.

I don’t care about other countries when their people don’t care to make changes. When we help we are thanked. Let’s them stew in their mess.

Egypt has always been a disaster..lived there back in the 80s. My trips in and out of Beirut were before the muzzies went crazy. I really don’t give a shiite what happens anywhere in the ME and N Africa.

With at least two more years of the Biden administration to destroy our agriculture, fuel sources, transportation, and financial systems, I don’t think we are immune.
