Why Putin's Increased Reliance on Wagner Mercenaries in Ukraine May Backfire & Destabilise Kremlin

Putin has reportedly deployed a large number of fighters from the Wagner group in the war in Ukraine. Unlike Syria and Libya, Russia’s reliance on the Wagner and other PMCs is believed to have significantly increased. Mounting losses in the ongoing war have forced the Kremlin to turn to the infamous Wagner mercenaries. However, experts warn these “lawless freebooters” can be as much a threat to the regime they serve as they are to the target they hunt. Experts say PMCs like the Wagner group may become extremely disruptive for Putin if their power continues to expand.

Ukraine ping

Kamil Galeev on how the logic of power politics dictates that an absolute ruler at the end of a successful military campaign, whether revolution or armed conquest, must eliminate those who made his victories possible, lest they decide to take for themselves, the fruits of those victories:

https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1490723533797822468.html
Why did I cover this story of Bolsheviks and SRs in a detailed way? Cuz I find it very Haldunian. In fact I find Haldunian concept of assabiyah highly relevant for the analysis of revolution Image

According to Haldun assabiyah is a coalition of brave upstarts, usually nomads or highlanders. They invade the lands of rotten and degenerate sedentary societies and conquer them Image

But the completion of conquest means the demise of assabiyah. Once it becomes victorious, one of its leader wants to usurp all the power and all the glory of the victory for himself. Who now becomes problematic? Well, the old comrades. Those who actually did the conquest Image

The thing is - before assabiyah came to power it was rather a loose coalition of various heterogenous forces. It was relatively democratic. Relations within it were more or less horizontal and even the leader had to consult with the rest. Nobody could just command Image

But once the conquest is over it starts to change. The leader will usurp all the power, all the glory, all the authority. Horizontal structure becomes a vertical structure and collective rule - a personal rule Image

Furthermore, the entire narrative of how victory is achieved is now completely reshaped. It was never loose horizontal structure, it was a hierarchy with one leader from the beginning. We are not only a monarchy, but we have always been a monarchy with a God-like leader Image

Therefore, the old comrades constitute danger. They are not only too proud and arrogant and dare to question the God-like leader. They are also a bearers of real knowledge of how victory was achieved and that things used to work in a very different way. They need to be eliminated Image

If you look at the October Revolution through lenses of assabiyah it makes sense. A very loose assabiyah of two parties came to power. Then one of them was purged ofc. But even the remaining party was still too loose, too horizontal. Too unstable. It still looked like this Image

It had to look like this. The progress of victory marks the demise and extermination of old assabiyah. Under the new order riches will belong not to the ones who conquered them and empire not the the ones who built it Image

While getting rid of his old comrades the God-like ruler will elevate strangers from nothing. They are nobody, and thus are completely dependent on his good graces. Consider, the Moscow processes of 1937-1938 when pretty much of the Bolshevik Old Guard was eliminated Image

That's Marat Gabidullin. He is a former Wagner group who gave a interview to NPR in June. Related thread: Link.

I didn’t see any Blackwater goons threatening Bush’s regime. The same applies to Russia full well.

SO WHO & WHAT EXACTLY IS LUKASHENKO:

Torture, sexual abuse and other forms of repression

On 9 August 2020, according to the preliminary count, Lukashenko was re-elected for his sixth term as the President of Belarus.[US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned that the election was “not free [or] fair”.

Mass protests erupted across Belarus following the 2020 Belarusian presidential election which was marred by allegations of widespread electoral fraud. On September 1, 2020, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) declared that its experts received reports of 450 documented cases of torture and ill-treatment of people who were arrested during the protests following the presidential election.

The experts also received reports of violence against women and children, including sexual abuse and rape with rubber batons. According to the OHCHR, both male and female detainees were subjected to rape and other forms of sexual and gender-based violence. Medical records reviewed by OHCHR indicate lesions and other injuries to the male genitalia associated with forcible twisting and rape. Psychological violence, including threats of rape, was also used against detainees. At least three detainees suffered injuries indicative of sexual violence while in Okrestino prison in Minsk or on the way there. The victims were hospitalized with intramuscular bleeding of the rectum, anal fissure and bleeding, and damage to the mucous membrane of the rectum.

In an interview from September 2020 Lukashenko claimed that detainees faked their bruises, saying, “Some of the girls there had their butts painted in blue”. In November 2021, however, Lukashenko confirmed in an interview to the British Broadcasting Corporation that people were beaten in Okrestino, saying: “OK, OK, I admit it, I admit it. People were beaten in the Okrestina Detention Centre.”

[In January 2021, an audio recording was released in which the commander of internal troops and deputy interior minister of Belarus Mikalai Karpiankou tells security forces that they can cripple, maim and kill protesters in order to make them understand their actions. This, he says, is justified because anyone who takes to the streets is participating in a kind of guerrilla warfare.]

Subsequently, opposition presidential candidate Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya claimed she had received between 60 and 70% of the vote peaceful and orderly transfer of power in Belarus.

On 15 August 2020, Lithuanian foreign minister Linas Linkevičius referred to Lukashenko as the “former president” of Belarus. It was reported that President Lukashenko’s authorities asked Kremlin representatives about the possibility of Lukashenko escaping to Russia.

On 17 August 2020, the members of the European Parliament issued a joint statement which stated that they do not recognise Alexander Lukashenko as the president of Belarus, considering him to be persona non grata in the European Union.

On 19 August, the member states of the European Union agreed to not recognize the results and issued a statement saying “The 9 August elections were neither free nor fair, therefore we do not recognize the results”.

The governments of the United States, United Kingdom and Canada have also refused to recognize the results.
In an interview on 22 August, Josep Borrell explicitly stated that the European Union does not recognize Lukashenko as the legitimate president of Belarus in the same manner that it does not recognize Nicolás Maduro as the legitimate president of Venezuela.

In a third video, he is seen surveying protestors from a helicopter and is heard saying “How the rats ran away” in an apparent reference to the protesters. In a fourth video, Lukashenko was seen removing the FORMER FLAG OF BELARUS from a flower bed, waving at security personnel and in reference to protesters, saying “we will deal with them”.

On 30 August, the Independence Palace became again a scene of protests. When questioned about the whereabouts of Alexander Lukashenko on this day, his publicity team released an undated photograph of him walking around the grounds of the Independence Palace holding a gun.
Lukashenko and Putin in February 2021

On 23 September 2020, Lukashenko was formally inaugurated president for a sixth term in a ceremony at the Palace of Independence attended by an invited group of 700 guests.

On 27 November 2020, Lukashenko announced that he would RESIGN once Belarus’ new constitution was adopted.

On 17 April 2021, Russia’s FSB security service exposed an alleged military coup and assassination attempt of Lukashenko.

On 24 April 2021, Lukashenko announced that he would sign a decree to amend emergency transfer of power. The president is yet to sign the decree and it would also be unconstitutional as Article 89 states how emergency transition of power is set up.

On 5 May 2021, Belarusians in Germany filed a legal complaint against Lukashenko for ‘state torture’ and ‘crimes against humanity.’ At the same time, HE SAID HE WILL NOT RESIGN, a reversal from his statement in November, but said he will call early presidential elections if and only if the United States does so as well.

“I think your comment is referencing the Azov Battalion not the Azoz???

When it was still a paramilitary force, the Azov Battalion was joined by elements described as ultra-nationalist. The Ukrainian government asserted that this battalion had been reformed from any extremist nationalist ideas and had nothing to do with politics. PUTIN SURE DIDN’T WANT TO HEAR THAT!

Interestingly, the Azov Battalion was funded primarily by donations, and since its formation has received support from wealthy Ukrainians, including the FORMER GOVENORS OF DNIPRO-PETROVSKA and DONETSK, Igor Kolomoisky and Serhiy Tarota.

“All these symphonies you play but it’s always just one note, over, and over and over”

TRUE, TRUTH IS TRUTH.

Truth does not change regardless of feelings. The truth may hurt, but that doesn’t make it any less true. The most loving thing we can do is be honest, and tell the truth to all people, regardless of how the substance of the truth makes them feel.

We are called to be filled with gentleness and respect, and at the same time we are called to stand firmly for the truth: to tell the truth in such a way the person knows we are not angry with them, but knows we are not moving from the truth.

No kidding. Every single post of hers concerns the Ukraine. What the hell country does she live in? It would be nice if she was concerned about the United States. Honestly, the people that are obsessed with supporting Ukraine are pure unpatriotic assholes.

“Azov’s still Nazis?

No, absolutely not.

Only Putin fantasizes that the 8-10% of ultra-nationalist that existed in the paramilitary force exists today in the the Azov Battalion. But, then ‘Lil Putin suffers from various delusions.

Nobody cares about your Ukraine.

I do. The Ukranians do.

I care when people's homes get flattened because some prick who wants to re-create the USSR decides that his insane dream is more important than Ukrainian lives.

I look forward to:
