Sept 2 (Reuters) - General Motors Co said Friday it will offer all of its estimated 2,000 U.S. Buick franchise dealers buyouts as it moves to make the brand all-electric by 2030 in the United States.

The Wall Street Journal reported the news earlier, quoting Global Buick chief Duncan Aldred who is set to discuss the plans with dealers Friday in a virtual meeting. He noted shifting to EVs will require significant investments by Buick dealers.

"So if they want to exit the Buick franchise, then we will give them monetary assistance to do so," Aldred told the newspaper.

Few people want electric cars, few can afford them, and the companies won’t have the raw materials to make that many batteries.

This is deliberate BS.

How the hell is someone going to drive cross-country in a hoopty golf cart? All these rules are formulated by people who live in cities and ride subways.

Unless they are sitting on some technology they are not speaking about (very much doubtful), there is no way the EV move will be successful. IMHO, this is just another way to kill our economy, force people into cities and impoverish the masses. Battery technology and lack of charging capacity is not going to get it done. Just another way our politicians are attacking the citizens. FJB . . . and the rest of the political creeps, too.

Dodge Challenger and Charger go all electric after 2023. No more Hemi.

I doubt people will pay an extra $20-$30 thousand for a car that you can’t really use as a highway vehicle.

Really the taxpayer should not have to pay to bail Chrysler and GM out yet again.

In a few short years we shall see.

Apparently the only Reason Buick survived the BK was they were apparently a status symbol in China….

Doubt that’s true anymore

One day when I was a kid, the next-door neighbor came home with one of these. Now, that was a Buick.

Buick sold 820,000 units in China last year, so it’s down some but hardly trivial numbers.

It’s hard to imagine that happening but you’re right now that NASCAR is woke, anything is possible, if it were to happen, I can’t see any traditional NASCAR fans remaining, you might as well make the cars remote controlled and eliminate the drivers.

“I loved the turbo Buick V6 cars at Indy.”

Those things sounded great, a low rumble.

I remember sitting close to the fence (seats have since been removed for safety) just past the start line when they came by at 240 mph in qualifying. It was like a shock wave.

Interesting. Hard to believe anyone thinks their current stuff is impressive I get back during the BK when Buick still made some bigger land yachts that they would be status symbols in a country where domestic cars were bread boxes… but anymore Buick vehicles are largely small indistinguishable fair.

I had one of those! 1970 Buick GS, turquoise blue with dual black racing stripes. Drew a lot of attention from the local police with that.

One of the best used cars I ever owned in early 1960’s was a Buick circa late 1950’s. Built like a tank, and ran like a solid machine with no rattles or sqeaks.

I have always thought of Buick as an old person’s brand

When saying goodbye my brother used to say, "Watch out for the Buicks"!

FWIW, on Fascist Economy from Wiki:

Fascist economics supported a state-controlled economy that accepted a mix of private and public ownership over the means of production. Economic planning was applied to both the public and private sector and the prosperity of private enterprise depended on its acceptance of synchronizing itself with the economic goals of the state. Fascist economic ideology supported the profit motive, but emphasized that industries must uphold the national interest as superior to private profit.
