A revolutionary, not a liberal: can a radical black mayor bring change to Mississippi?
Guardian ^ | 9/11/2017 | Jamiles Lartey

The 34-year-old attorney who had “never run for junior class president, let alone mayor” now holds the keys to the state’s most populous city. He brings with him a progressive agenda and much of the leftover to-do list of his father’s administration. He sees his victory – collecting 93% of the vote in Jackson’s 6 June election – as proof that even in a deep red Republican state, and even in the age of Trump, the city’s residents are ready to move in a new progressive direction.

“The citizens of Jackson have demonstrated overwhelmingly a readiness to be a progressive city and not only to correct the ills as we see them, but to be a model for the nation of what progressive leadership and collective genius can accomplish.”

It’s hard not to conjure allusions to young Obama when Lumumba walks in the room. Perhaps it’s the African-sounding name, the slightness of build or the warm smile and effortless personability. Lumumba has a beard wisped with salt and pepper streaks, and a better fitting suit than Obama did circa 2004, but otherwise the nostalgia connects.

Like Obama, Lumumba spent much of his formative years around radical voices of black liberation, engrossed in community work and navigating a budding career as a gifted young black law professional before moving into the world of electoral politics.

Yeah, he has already failed on the job. He is not capable of anything positive. The people of Jackson are now enjoying the fruits of progressivism, but they may be too stupid to know it.

Jackson Mississippi is 82.5% black. It is only surprising and virtuous to the media that the black voters overwhelmingly vote for a black Democrat politician.

been mayor for five years...the new Obama?

That was the secret of Caliph Baraq's successful climb to the top. He never stayed in one position long enough for the fails to catch up with him (except for POTUS).

Yep. He’s a revolutionary.

Citizens will be worse off, and he’s making it happen.

My experience is that state capital cities are always first in line when it comes to writing legislative budgets. And the farther away you are from the capital, the more the voters get shorted.

So for Jackson to fail this badly says that graft & corruption are way above average levels.

That Mississippi is horribly corrupt beyond measure is a given. I’ve been there twice and it’s a sad sight all around.

I would start any investigation with this Mayor and his entire cabinet. Then move on to his family. The Governor should utterly embarrass him.

The right has allowed the left/neocons to control our borders and decide who enters the country, our education and what our children know and our media which tells them what to believe.

It’s inevitable, if nothing is done and we keep business as usual.

“as proof that even in a deep red Republican state, and even in the age of Trump, the city’s residents are ready to move in a new progressive direction.”

Jackson is 79% black, about as black as some African cities.

Take a look at how many years they’ve known about this problem.

Take a look at how much tax money has been allocated over those years to fix this problem.

Where did the money go?

Maybe the citizens can go to the politicians vacation condos to get some water.

His father was once vice president of the New Afrikan Republic, a black nationalist/separatist movement that claims Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina as a black homeland. The folks at Stormfront would approve the goal, if not the territory claimed.

Mississippi may be red, but Jackson hasn’t been anything but Democrat led for decades upon decades. The fact that his agenda is that of his father’s leftover to-do list, proves that point. 😋
