Mikhail Gorbachev, who ended the Cold War without bloodshed but failed to prevent the collapse of the Soviet Union, has died at the age of 92, Russian news agencies cited hospital officials as saying on Tuesday.

He had good intentions and Putin had the paving equipment.
“So his part was mostly one that he stumbled into.”
That is a perfect way to put it!
an your point, that he moved to quickly and his policies backfired, is a very good one too.
“Complex events have complex causes” as one of my old history teachers used to say.
BURN IN HELL!
The “Gorbasms” were all expended on Zelenskyy in the past several months, as a kind of stand in for a “pivotal” Gorbachev figure I think. Misplaced. Gorby was a legitimately important figure in retrospect, and if Rush were around to see the transformations of the past year or so, I think he’d see Gorby in a better light. Although I was certainly around for his “Gorbasm” rants, I think most of his oppobrium was directed at out Media and the hypocrisy of their stance toward Gorby.
according to “The History Channel”, WW2 was won by Russian woman
I can believe it. The history channel is no longer about history but faux stories like ancient astronauts.
Gave up on it long ago except for the Viking series and a few other shows.
Reagan ended the Cold War
The US treason media all day has been saying Gorbachev did because God forbid they should give any kind of praise to a Republican. I freakin’ hate the living guts of the media today, 99.99999999% of all the trouble we are facing today in this country is all on them. If they were honest with the public, the democrap party of today would be voted out of existence.
Gorbachev had no choice. The Soviet Union was collapsing. Does everyone forget that Gorbachev was head of the COMMUNIST party that is responsible for the greatest number of people murdered in the 20th Century? Millions of people were oppressed under his leadership and he had a huge part in the Chernobyl nuclear disaster coverup.
“Helmut Kohl, too.”
And the King of Saudi Arabia, who lowered oil prices to starve the USSR of hard currency.
And Pope John Paul II. Not being Catholic I can still give him credit.
And then he founded the Green Cross International and Global Green USA and worked tirelessly to subvert America with Commie Climate Change agendas.
Gorbachev ended the Cold War like Louis XVI ended the French monarchy.
“You know, the Soviet Union has just introduced two new breakfast cereals honoring its leader and first lady. They’re called Raisa Bran and Gorba Chex, and They will be on the U. S. market late summer.”
SNL Weekend update (1998).
That's definitely worth something.
Hindsight reveals that the USSR lacked the resources to be. Gorbachev knew that
Putin frivolously believes he now possess such resources and can rebuild
That's definitely worth something.
You reminded me of The ABC's of Dead Russian Leaders
“Reagan and Thatcher ended it”
Others contributed too, but basically it was Reagan.
President Reagan set out to defeat the Russian communist empire. By some odd coincidence, the Soviet Union fell.
Peter Scheizer wrote a book and did a documentary on “Reagan’s War.” He covered military actions and also non-military actions. As an example of the latter, Reagan knew the Soviets were stealing our commercial technology. So we doctored hydroelectric turbine plans to be stolen. The Soviets stole the plans, built the turbines, and they failed most expensively.
When it comes to increased military preparedness, one can go on and on. Just one small portion follows. The Soviets said that their tanks would arrive in Paris 72 after the balloon went up. That was no idle boast, and everyone knew it. Reagan’s response:
Abrams battle tank
Apache tank-killing helicopter
Warthog tank-killing fixed wing aircraft
Javelin anti-tank missile
Improved Howitzer
Multiple Launch Rocket System
Pershing missile system with nuclear warheads.
“It should be noted that Gorby BEGGED the West not to let Ukraine join NATO.
The West should have listened to him.”
Ukraine is not a member of NATO.
“Ukraine is not a member of NATO.”
Yep, and all efforts to that effect have been, how do you say, ‘neutralized’.
