President Emmanuel Macron warned the French on Wednesday of tough months ahead as the world faces "a big shift", with government spokesman Olivier Veran adding that the cap on energy prices will have to end.
The billion euro energy price cap, which has helped households cope with soaring inflation, looks set to expire this winter, the government said. Gas prices in France are currently frozen and there is currently a cap on power price hikes.
Both have helped keep French inflation lower than many of its EU peers but are weighing heavily on the public purse.
Furthermore, pension and unemployment benefit scheme reforms are also in the works and will likely trigger street protests.
Unions swiftly rejected Macron’s call for sacrifices to be made, saying workers needed higher pay to cope with rising inflation.

France need to get more gas from Algeria.
More socialism. That'll fix things.
All because socialism does not work..thump..socialism does not work..thump..socialism does not work..thump..socialism does not work..
The current world leaders have created a massive train wreck for their stupid ideology. The masses will rise up in an ugly way one of these days.
That is what scares them most. You leave people with nothing left to lose and you have created a monster.
A big shift should invove guillotines for Macron.
A Lefty of my acquaintance tried to debate "socialism versus capitalism." I observed that "capitalism" was a preoccupation with those writing about it -- as in Marx' Das Kapital and Piketty's Capitalism in the Twenty-first Century -- tried to pretend it was a "thing."
But the real opposition is not between socialism in any of its forms and clever word play and an erected opposition as the Left sees it is that the real opposition is between authoritarian government and liberty.
Liberty is not an economic system, but it is highly productive. And socialism in all its forms detest that. Liberty annoys the Left. It certainly annoyed the Lefty with whom I debated. He had no effective response, because he needed a straw man against which to contend.
The conflict is between socialism in any and all of its forms and liberty. Plain and simple.
