White House officials have been weighing -- and leaning toward -- the cancellation of up to $10,000 in student loan debt per borrower tied to an income threshold, CNN has learned.
According to multiple sources familiar with the discussions, the plan is designed to offer the forgiveness to individuals who earn less than $125,000 per year.
In addition to that baseline of student loan debt forgiveness for individuals who fall under a certain income level, administration officials have also recently discussed the possibility of additional forgiveness for specific subsets of the population, according to sources familiar with internal discussions in the administration.

Specific subsets of the population....,
Let me guess
Like the current crop of doctors, not exactly cream of the crop but foreigners did get in from certain locals I guess that’s a subset thing too.
What part of the Constitution gives the POTUS the right to cancel the debts of some citizens and assign those debts to all of the other citizens?
And here I used to think our end times Caligula was a ways off. They’re everywhere
They should only get that IF THEY GOT A DEGREE AND GRADUATED.
THAT should be the requirement. Not this f-ing around nonstop keg party BS and screw around for 5-6 years just taking classes so they don’t have to actually get a job and ring up a tab the US taxpayers are on the hook for.
What about the tradesmen (plumbers, electricians, etc) who were required to purchase tools and equipment to operate?
Cross tabs on big data
Fixed it.
Joe Biden is so generous. An earlier story said he was giving Mozambique $41 million dollars and now he’s forgiving $10,000 of student debt for everyone who hasn’t paid off their debt and makes less than $125,000. For those who did the right thing and paid off their debt—too bad.
What a guy!
If they are going to do this then they should tax college endowments to pay for it.
See how fast this stops.
That super, duper new IRS army will snoop on your underwear drawer for answers.
What about those of us who saved for our children’s college and paid for it?
Good point.
That really doesn’t make much sense to me. Those colleges with significant endowments tend to be the ones with successful alums.
Constitution says ‘equal protection’; SCOTUS has ruled in the past that it NOT only applies to race.
When do I get my $10,000 check?
Suckers
No
I could get behind this IF, in exchange, they irreversibly forfeit any credentials achieved from the education AND all credits earned should be zeroed. If you get a refund for a real good you bought, you don’t get to keep the item.
More welfare for women.
Leaning?
My take is he is in the pool head first all but his toes
already under water on this.
