Tucked into the tax and spending bill that passed the Senate this weekend was a $15 million provision to study allowing the IRS to prepare taxes.
The provision comes after Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., and other Democrats have pushed legislation for adding tax filing to the agency's purview.
The Inflation Reduction Act, which passed the House Friday after clearing the Senate — the vote was 50-50 with Vice President Kamala Harris breaking the tie — appropriates almost $80 billion to the tax agency. That would enable the IRS to hire its desired 87,000 agents over the next decade to increase tax enforcement.

y’know a great thing to do to help the taxpayers?
ABOLISH THE INCOME TAX.
Make the states pay their share as was the original intent.
The fed is too big!

From the article:
"The legislation looks to expand a program that was first put in place for the stimulus checks to respond to COVID-19 in 2020.

Yes, most of whom, if cpas are Registered Agents of the IRS— and thus the extra agents are NOT needed (as the Agents they think they can hire, have zero liability for what they claim a taxpayer got wrong!!). All is based on court decisions- cause if you only follow publications of the IRS you STILL can be accused of not doing the return correctly. CPAs have insurance against such screwups.

It’s people like Liz who have caused me (in retirement) to look for every possible way to lower my taxable income legally by using the government’s own classification rules.
If the govt ever starts taxing interest, dividends, mineral royalties, capital gains and Treasury Bonds as “earned income” most retirees will be in mucho trouble.

All my income comes with 1099s so I'd save money on accountants.
(I might save even more, since the IRS is less than 100% accurate matching up 1099s with 1040s.)

Sadly that would require a constitutional amendment. However… I think it is more likely this amendment would run the tough gauntlet to pass than the gender crap the left is pushing.
