Nivedita Bhasin became the world’s youngest commercial airline captain in 1989, but the Indian pilot still recalls her early years when other crew would urge her to rush into the cockpit so passengers wouldn’t get nervous at the sight of a woman flying their plane.
Three decades after Bhasin’s career began, female pilots are no longer a rarity in India, making the country a success story when it comes to diversity in the airline industry. India has the highest percentage of female pilots globally, the International Society of Women Airline Pilots estimates, with about 12.4% of all pilots women, compared with 5.5% in the US, the world’s largest aviation market, and 4.7% in the UK.

Knowing my mother who published a cook book due to demand from relatives and friends, and my 3 older sisters who all graduated with science and math degrees in 1940’s, I tend to agree with you.
And add to that, women are not treated as second class citizens in Hindu religion, unlike some other religion which everyone knows which one.
Women pilots all over the world have better safety records than men pilots. Women tend to follow rules and procedures meticulously, whereas men are prone to take short cuts.
I became Trump fan 2 decades ago through golf. He appeared frequently on golf channel. After I retired at age 57 due to myriad of health issues, I started playing golf full time, like 5 rounds of 18 every week. And followed PGA & LPGA a lot. I belonged to a private golf club in Vancouver, WA and never missed attending LPGA tournaments at another private club in Portland, across the Columbia river, where LPGA had a tournament every year.
Amen.
I had 3 older sisters and 1 older brother. I am certain my parents did not kill female babies. Not only that, all my sisters graduated from college in 1940’s and 1950’s.
Are we talking about jockeys or pilots?
Noooo, it couldn't be that !! /s
Why do people care? Why should they care?
I have flown with many female pilots who were pushed through, given extra sim time - when the white males would have been sent home- and given many chances. They were just terrible pilots. Over my 25 year career, I had flown with several who deserved where they were but there are just certain jobs that need to avoid this affirmative action BS and give the job to the most qualified.
Pilots.
Seems like a way for a woman to escape the home and family. Kinda sad really.
We’re waiting for Biden to perfect the pregnancy pilot suits ...
They have 3-5 times the population of the USA.
Are we really that dumb?
I suspect she and her family see it as a way to improve all their lives. They may have all helped to pay for her education as well. She may be the first link in a longed for chain migration to America.
When she gets home, they feast and hold her up as a model to all the other children and to work harder at math.
It sure as hell beats being sold to an old man so your family can buy rice.
I think the article is trying to make a different point. USA is one of the most advanced countries and known for equality for women more than most other countries. Whereas India is perceived as a 3rd world country where widows jumped on a pyre of fire to commit suicide and boys are preferred babies over girls. Therefore 15%+ female pilots in India compared to only 5%+ in USA is a bit surprising.
That being the case, God bless them. But I think there are many women who simply run from their God-given destiny of home and family not realizing that is where their happiness really is.
Dunno. The best and smartest man the democrat party could find to run is the president.
You tell me.
Are we that dumb?
So, then as long as the planes and taxi, T.O., cruise, land and taxi while maintaining good communications....we are home free!!! Whoo hoo!
