Soldiers under Putin are 'dissatisfied' and under-supplied amid 'terrible war'
Mr Filatiev, 33, dressed in his army uniform, was part of Russia's invading forces on February 24. But now he opposes the 'terrible war' Russia had 'no moral right' to begin
Putin's soldiers had no idea they were invading Ukraine until they took return fire from Kyiv forces, an ex-paratrooper in the Russian army has revealed in an explosive new memoir.
Pavel Filatiev, 33, says his elite unit was moved to the border with Ukraine after he had seen talk of a planned invasion in the world's media, but that they were sent in with no warning that they'd be facing enemy forces.
His memoir also tells how he was given a rusty machine gun and an ill-fitting uniform, and that his comrades were wiped out because they were using 'our grandfathers' tactics'.
He said he woke up to the sound of gunfire in the back of an army truck crossing the border at 2am on February 24, the day the invasion began.
Filatiev asked: 'Are we firing at advancing Ukrainians?
'Where we were going and why wasn't clear. It was clear that a real war had begun. I found out [we had] orders to go to Kherson.'

As shelling started and Ukrainian soldiers began firing at Russian vehicles, Filatiev said he realised he had invaded the neighbouring country.
He added: ‘It became clear that we had attacked Ukraine.’
In an explosive new book, Filatiev has highlighted appalling shortcomings from ill-fitting uniforms to army medics without syringes or painkillers.
LOL! you fools will buy anything, it’s hilarious.
No one likes Russians. Russians don’t like Russians, when you see how these Russian boys were sent BLIND into Ukraine with non- functioning weapons.
No one who lives in nations that were in the old USSR likes Russians. They know the Russian boot on their necks. Such nations as: — Ukraine, Georgia, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia — NONE want the stupid, barbaric Roooskies lording over them again.
He wrote a book that will prove you the denialist tool and fool. I can't wait until it comes out in English.
BS
It would take a retarded child to believe this level of propaganda.
... and whose fault was it that their machine guns were rusty???
With all due respect, most Russian firearms work just fine when rusty. Perhaps better.
CC
I got better...
UK Daily Fake News
“whose fault was it that their machine guns were rusty???”
The armorer for storing them in wet conditions and the officers for not conducting periodic inspections, then neglecting to remediate the issues before the weapons were issued to the troops for combat operations!!
Total FKN Shit Show of leadership!
Stabbed in the back!
Good luck winning anything when the troops have ZERO confidence in an obviously corrupt and incompetent leadership.
This is similar to Russian army conditions of 1917. This will end in revolution.
There’s some truth there, my Army familiarization fire of Russian rifles and machine guns started with instructors digging them out of the dirt, hosing them off, shaking off the water and opening fire.
So Russia equipped their paratroopers with rusty weapons?
And these paratroopers never considered cleaning their weapons?
Sounds like some VERY WEAK story telling.
The Russian revolution against the Czar and Nobility was stolen by the Bolsheviks.
The Russian Serfs still have no idea how to function as a government
I have an easier time believing they were issued weapons that still bled cosmoline when they got warm.
Reminds me of the Soviet soldiers sent to Hungary to put down the 1956 revolution who were told that they were fighting near the Suez Canal.
And soldiers are generally smart enough that they could swap out uniforms until most had a reasonable fit.
I can get you some land in Texas at 10 cents an acre, no kidding...
