It’s the law: In New York, whipped cream cans are adults-only

You have to show ID to buy alcohol, cigarettes, and even a can of whipped cream in New York State.

If you’ve bought the tasty addition to pie or ice cream since last fall in New York, you may have seen signs telling you you’ll have to hand over more than just payment at the register. Whipped cream cans are filled with nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas

If inhaled, the gas — also known as “whippets” or “whippits” — offers a type of high. Since November 2021, anyone under the age of 21 is prohibited from buying whipped cream cans. The law primarily targets the nitrous oxide canisters inside the cans, not the whipped cream itself, which is just guilty by association.

“I have not [done it], but I do know people who have,” says Chloe Diegel. “I think it seems a little ridiculous and silly, especially on days like this when you can make some ice cream sundaes.”

Democratic state Sen. Joseph Addabbo first proposed the legislation in 2019 after receiving numerous complaints in his Long Island district.

Yeah but Primer is a chemical. Probably more dangerous than a tub of whip cream.

Not sure if it’s controlled because idiots inhale the fumes or if it can be mixed into something more dangerous.

Thank you!

I remember looking on that with awe in my parents’ record collection. I was probably 8 or 9, and not sure what I was looking at, but it sure was interesting!

So you need an ID to buy WHIPPED CREAM, but not for voting?? I guess, whipped cream is now racist, since blacks do not have ID - according to Democrats!

Sorry, but I think ID is more important for voting, than for buying canned whipped cream...Anyone agree with me?

Korvette’s was in Roseville, MI

New York office headquarters used to ask my boss “Is it true you just let the local cows walk through the store out there. Out in the country like you are.”

Obviously he was not huffing whipped cream. He was old enough that he was not restricted from buying anything in an aerosol can. So, maybe they should raise the age to 35.

I wanted to design, print and sell wraparound labels one could apply to whipped cream cans displaying the brand name “CanaJamas”. Of course, the label would also provide usage instructions.

Too bad; my wife wouldn’t let me move forward with the idea.

Crap, if you're 18 (or 17 (*) if a parent(s)/guardian(s) sign for you), they stick an M-16A1 or M-3 Grease Gun in your hands and you can die for your country. However, you cannot buy a can of whipped cream. I used to read Highlights Magazine as a kid where they had something like, "what is wrong with this picture?"

* - My father joined the Army on his 17th birthday in 1954 and was sent to guard the gold at Fort Knox and after that, Camp Casey in South Korea.

In Ohio you can’t buy cough syrup if you are under 18.

My grandson too. When he was 6 or 7 he got up in the middle of the night and took everything out of the refrigerator and lined up everything in order from shortest ao tallest, except for the can of whipped cream and A1 steak sauce. He took them in the living room with him while he watched cartoons.

In NY you have to be 21 to buy a can of whipped cream, but a 3 year old can get a sex change. Makes sense.

Welcome to the new world.
