In a joint initiative, African countries are renewing their efforts to obtain reparations from European countries for the transatlantic slave trade and other colonial-era wrongs committed centuries ago.
The slave trade — which affected millions of Africans — was the largest forced migration in history and one of the most inhumane.
Over 400 years, Africans were transported to many areas of the world, yet no reparations have as yet been paid. The process is proving much slower than many Africans expected.
This week Ghana's president, Nana Akufo-Addo, revived the push for slavery and colonial retribution.
"No amount of money can restore the damage caused by the transatlantic slave trade — and its consequences — which has spanned many centuries, but nevertheless, it is now time to revive and intensify the discussions about reparation for Africa," Akufo-Addo said at a summit on reparations and racial healing in Accra, Ghana.
Ghana was one of the points of departure for many of those enslaved in West Africa and, for the Ghanaian leader, the time for reparations for colonial crimes and slavery is "long overdue."

And who was being traded with to get the slaves?
The West concurs.
I Agree.
Since Spain kidnapped and abused about 95% of the African slaves, let’s just hand over all Spanish speaking countries to the tender mercies of African despots.
Comical. They still enslave their own kind in Africa today! The Dutch did buy slaves! From the slavers themselves!!!!
Exactly! The West paid for the slaves at the outset, and The West has been paying for them ever since.
Only the descendants of slaves should be given reparations, and as a condition of that compensation, they should forego any and all rights of Western Citizenship and be immediately repatriated to Africa.
Is there a rebate for AIDS et al?
Your own people sold you out, Africans...
These reparation seekers have the wrong targets. Their “ancestors” were gathered up & sold by Africans not by Europeans. If not bought once collected they were slaves to other Africans.
Bums looking for handouts…..
Yep. The most expensive cotton in history.
“...Only the descendants of slaves should be given reparations...”
And these “reparations” should be paid by the tribes whose chiefs sold their own people to the slave traders...
As if the continent of Africa ever in its entire history had been a single, monolithic, unified entity.
I read the article fairly carefully and did not read of any compensation due the African countries from the countries that provided the Arab slave traders. I hope someone else can show me where that item is in the article.
Of course they are leaving out the fact that it was their own people who were capturing and selling those slaves. So I would say they should pay reparations to themselves.
Africans gathered other Africans who were then sold to Europeans. If the Euros feel guilty and want to give money....whatever. As far as the US goes, you can have the Africans back and we’ll call it even.
Tell Ghana to go pound sand.
The African tribes that won the tribal wars and then sold their prisoners into slavery should pay the reparations—to those defeated tribes.
The slaves were slaves—the only question was whether their new masters would be African, Arab or European.
Africa made money in the slave trade, they didn’t suffer.
Did the white man go out in the bush and capture people. They sold their own people.
They don’t know their own history.
When I was in the Ivory Coast, my interpreter would explain to me as we drove through villages, that those people use to be his ancestor’s slaves.
The best way to deal with Ghana is no foreign aid—ever again.
