A jury in Austin ordered Alex Jones to pay $4.1 million to the parents who lost children in the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School who sued the InfoWars host for defamation.
Jones was sued by the parents after the radio host and conspiracy theorist said the Sandy Hook massacre, the deadliest mass shooting at a U.S. elementary school, was “completely fake” and a “giant hoax” during a 2017 radio show. Opening statements and testimony for the trial began last week, and the jury broke for deliberations on Wednesday.

Ouch and damn.
Bear in mind that these are compensatory damages. There will be another hearing to establish punitive damages.
Yes, this is just the beginning. What a lout.
Looks like he’s getting off easy.
I didn’t follow this case, and I have no idea what Alex Jones said because I don’t listen to his show.
Did he slander or defame someone?
In spite of Mr Jones aleging a real event was a scam or a hoax, and in spite of deaths that occurreed in the event, since when do mere feelings about those things constitute “defeamation”.
I’ll put it this way. If ABC/CBS/CNBC/CNN/MSNBC/NBC/NPR first reported, from some anonymous sources, that the Sandy Hook event was a hoax or scam (no matter if they later retracted that reporting), would we now be seeing a defamation suit against ABC/CBS/CNBC/CNN/MSNBC/NBC/NPR? I don’t think so.
HAHAHHAHA. Far short of the 150 million they were asking. Good luck next time.
Don’t be so quick to laugh. This was the compensatory damages phase of the case. There will be another hearing to establish punitive damages.
Because he voiced his personal opinion? This country sure as hell isn’t free anymore.
Maybe he can build solar panels
Bear in mind that this sets president for law suits against the provocateurs on the left. Sometimes these victories get pyric. It will be hard for this or the coming punitive damages to stand well on appeal.
How likely is that number to be larger?
Bear in mind that these are compensatory damages. There will be another verdict to establish punitive damages.
He said it was a hoax and all the parents were actors.
And this is just one trial for (I think) one set of parents. There are another two trials coming soon, one of which he's already been found at-fault in. Could be hundreds of millions in liabilities.
If they’re going to award punitive damages, it’ll be substantially higher. I would guess at least mid double digit millions.
You're funny.
He didn’t actually name any of the parents though which makes this case interesting.
Punitive damages are by their very nature and intent excessive, they should not exist in this country. There should only be monetary damages.
