Punitive damages are by their very nature and intent excessive, they should not exist in this country. There should only be monetary damages.

Disagree, there are plenty of cases where punitive damages are appropriate, even if they bankrupt someone.

So defamation and slander should have no repercussions? No punishment? Punitive damages are, by their very definition, the punishment for the defendants actions. They're what is supposed to make people like Jones think twice before speaking and maybe make sure what they are saying is true.
