INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Police have changed their description of the crash that killed Indiana Republican U.S. Rep. Jackie Walorski, saying Thursday that it was the SUV in which she was a passenger that crossed a state highway’s centerline and caused the head-on crash.

I work professionally in a field where motor vehicle crashes are a big issue. In a high-speed crash like this, many details of the incident are rarely known until a thorough investigation takes place. Even the exact location of the initial point of impact may not be known, since the vehicles are often damaged beyond recognition and come to a stop far from the collision point.
In my experience, the four most likely potential causes of a crash like this (in no particular order) are:
1. intoxicated/impaired driver(s)
2. distracted driver(s)
3. drowsy driver(s)
4. vehicle equipment failure (a tire blowout, for example)
