Yikes: Florida electric vehicle owner barely escapes disaster after EV fire
The Blue State Conservative ^ | 8/03/2022 | Hailey Sanibal

Posted on 08/03/2022 7:39:15 AM PDT by SaxxonWoods

In what seems like a daily occurrence, another electric car has gone up in flames. I have previously covered self-immolating electric buses, deadly battery fires after an EV car crash that engulfed two helpless teens, and while not ultimately deadly, countless other episodes where electric vehicles simply failed completely.

All of this, again, doesn’t even cover the fact that electric vehicles get their charge from an outlet that relies almost entirely on fossil fuels. I also covered that – in a piece where the CEO of GM touted her new line of cars…until she got asked where the source of electricity came from. Only then did she admit that the Michigan town utilized more than 95% of its power from coal.

Trust the science. ICE cars catch fire much more frequently than horses. LOL

When I was living in Waterview Cluster in Reston, Virginia an ICE car (probably on its way home given the time) caught fire near my townhouse.

I agree with your comment. But there is enough of an issue even if you grant parity for chance of fire.

I first learned of the issue when an entire parking garage burned down because of an EV. The fires don't go out, and they ignite the vehicles around them creating an unbelievable inferno.

There, they should be called CVs, not EVs. They're Coal Vehicles.

“My gas-guzzling jalopy keeps looking better and better.”

I love my ‘08 Nissan Frontier 4WD long bed, great multi-purpose vehicle. Ran across a good deal from a relative so I’m adding a 2016 Ford F150 4WD twin turbo to my stable. I hear they can be hopped up well beyond the 365 horses they come with.

Insurance is normally purchased to financially protect against rare but costly events.

The walls of garages must be built to have at least the fire rating (say a one-half hour ability to resist a fire) required by the local building code. This has been the case for many decades.

I think my Corvair had a gas tank mounted at the rear end, and if struck by another vehicle from behind, the fuel could spill and start a fire.

While EVs do not experience fires at a higher rate than gas-powered cars”

All depends on how you measure it...if they’re comparing one to one of course not.....evs are a fraction of cars on the road.

Earlier this year a ship transporting high end E-Vehicles (Porsche) caught fire in mid-Atlantic. The battery fire couldn't be contained by the crew and they abandoned ship. A salvage vessel tried to tow the ship but it sank.
Bottom line, if you own an e-vehicle don't park it in a garage attached to your home.

And with a tesla you can get both at once

My carburetor caught on fire many years ago. But I was able to put it out by myself.

“I read that at one time at least one building code required thicker gypsum board for garages.”

As of the last time I was involved with such things, all attached garages were required to have a one hour firewall between the garage and the house. That’s very old information, don’t know if building codes have changed.

An EV fire burns much hotter than other fires. I also read that a high percentage of EV wrecks result in totaling the car.
Damage the battery, it’s over for the car. All EV owners should have gap insurance if they have a loan on the car.

“doubt most fire trucks have enough water to douse one”

Water won’t extinguish a ev battery fire.

This fire crew put thousands of gallons on this one and ended up just watching it burn.
