Yikes: Florida electric vehicle owner barely escapes disaster after EV fire
The Blue State Conservative ^ | 8/03/2022 | Hailey Sanibal

In what seems like a daily occurrence, another electric car has gone up in flames. I have previously covered self-immolating electric buses, deadly battery fires after an EV car crash that engulfed two helpless teens, and while not ultimately deadly, countless other episodes where electric vehicles simply failed completely.

All of this, again, doesn’t even cover the fact that electric vehicles get their charge from an outlet that relies almost entirely on fossil fuels. I also covered that – in a piece where the CEO of GM touted her new line of cars…until she got asked where the source of electricity came from. Only then did she admit that the Michigan town utilized more than 95% of its power from coal.

Well. Gas engines do catch on fire too. It remains to he seen if electric ones catch on fire more often though. Likely they do.

At least they can salvage the emblem on the grille.

I’m never putting one of these things in my garage!

Based on reports and anecdotal info, I’d say EV fires are 1,000 more common than ICE fires.

In ICE cars, you just need leak-tight fuel lines from the tank to the fuel injectors. That’s a LOT simpler than assuring the integrity and reliability of tens of thousands of highly flammable lithium cells. All it takes is just one of those cells to go “Pffttt…bzzzt” and the whole battery stack goes up, burns hot, and cannot be extinguished. Gasoline fires can be extinguished.

Can batteries be improved enough to be as safe as gasoline? I doubt it.

Ah, finally, Lucas can change their slogan from “Prince of Darkness” to “King of Light & Heat”.

I guess the problem is the existing electrical charge still happening. I remember first responders had to be specially trained in the event of any EV crash...

Whoa Whoa Whoa…easy easy.

EVs are gonna save the world

They’re the safest thing things around.

One day you’ll be able to circumnavigate the world on 2 AAA batteries.

And they’re GREEN. Really GREEN.

Now that’s some serious Global Warming right there. Somebody should notify Al Gore about this.

“the fact that electric vehicles get their charge from an outlet that relies almost entirely on fossil fuels”

There’s also the fact that combined cycle power plants have an efficiency (fuel to power) of about 60%, several times that of typical internal combustion engines.

The United Kingdom has extracted most of the oil in its part of the North Sea, but it still has plenty of natural gas. Rather than weaken the pound through the purchase of foreign oil for ICE cars, the UK is choosing to use domestic natural gas to indirectly power electric cars.

Natural gas is harder to transport oil. Therefore, Norway is choosing to export almost all its oil production and use its natural gas to power electric cars.

I haven’t read any recent reports of an ICE catching fire while parked and turned off

If you’ve got em then show em

For many years, garages for gasoline-powered horseless carriages were normally built separate from the house.

It was not until the 1930s that garages were normally built into houses.

I read that at one time at least one building code required thicker gypsum board for garages.

Does lithium react to water the same way magnesium does? If so, doubt most fire trucks have enough water to douse one.

Good, concise article. But I question this: “While EVs do not experience fires at a higher rate than gas-powered cars”

In the 1960s, my family watched a gasoline-powered VW burn on the local highway after a collision.

Houses do occasionally catch fire and mortgage companies require insurance coverage for that now rare possibility.

Yes of course, but gas powered usually catch on fire due to poor maintenance or human error.

These things seem to just catch on fire for no real reason other than the lithium battery.
