The pro-life movement suffered a defeat in Kansas on Tuesday when the state overwhelmingly voted to uphold abortion “rights.”
The vote in Kansas on Tuesday centered on whether or not the state would remove abortion rights protections in the State Constitution, potentially paving the way for “state lawmakers to pass far-reaching abortion restrictions, or even to pursue a ban,” according to the New York Times.
With 76 percent reporting, the “No” votes to keep abortion rights in place beat the “Yes” votes by double digits – 62.2 percent versus 37.7 percent as of this writing. Both NBC News and the New York Times have projected “No” as the referendum winner.
Abortion activists and Democrat lawmakers celebrated the victory.
“This is huge: abortion rights were on the ballot for the first time since Roe, and the people of Kansas voted to preserve access,” tweeted Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). “I’m grateful down to my toes for everyone who helped stop this dangerous ballot measure in its tracks.”

That’s already the case. More than half of abortions in Kansas are from women who live outside the state.
I understand this vote prevents legislature implementing a ban. The news articles crow as if abortion is now completely unrestricted, which is a sick thing to celebrate.
I’m so disgusted with my home state.
But but muh red wave.
We’ve got our work cut out for us, folks!
bans off our bodies? Dawg even Laz would not hit on those bodies!!
Bucket up your seatbelt, Dorothy, ‘cause Kansas is going bye-bye!
This state is cursed.
Actually, Kansas is more of a bellweather than people think, as it is the image of the power of ‘wokeism’ at work. Good ol’ friendly midwest people that want to get along just keep compromising and rationalizing and ‘live and let live’ in the face of immoral anti-authoritarians.
Kansas truly is a stain on the face of the nation, and will suffer for it.
Well, Kansas finally has something that will attract tourism. Abortion clinics will pop up everywhere.
Two words: George Tiller

I remember that nightmare. An abortion clinic with a creamatoriam. That guy was a nazi doctor if ever was one.
Righ now at 8:006am, with 96% in it’s 41.2% YES, 58.8% NO. Either way, we lost.
The Kansas legislature should state that the people have spoken and abortion will remain a right. But rights apply irrespective of sex, and fully half the Kansas population is not afforded access to their abortion rights. The legislature should immediately pass a law that gives that other half the population access to their abortion rights. MEN, who now have no remedial choice in the matter, will be able to proclaim a “financial abortion” in lieu of the medical one available to women. Promising to disclaim all parental relationships, the petitioning male will sever all future financial responsibilities. A right is a tight.
The Democrats were very smart. Bringing up the abortion vote on the Supreme Court and tying the decision to conservatives will have a huge impact on the upcoming election and the next presidential election.
Liberals already believe that conservatives in SCOTUS 'banned' abortion. There are now some independents who will never vote for a Republican.
well that’s true. as much as the religious types don’t like it, lots of adults have sex outside of marriage.
I’m sure we have unmarried FR’s that engage in sexual behavior.
Was it one of those trick questions for the stupid ?
“States choosing to codify their own abortion laws without federal interference. In other words the way it should have been since a long time ago.”
You are precisely correct. Roe v Wade was a direct attack on the individual states self government rights guaranteed in The Constitution. As such, it was also an attack on The Constitution.
I wish Kansas had not voted the way it did. I recognize it is their absolute constitutional right to vote the way they did.
I don't know about you, but I don't like a policy of aborting 60+ million babies in my lifetime because of supposedly legitimate 60,000 abortions. The other 59+ million were aborted over just convenience. And even with the "legitimate" abortions, the baby didn't rape the mama but the baby is the only one getting the death penalty for it. Maybe the baby ought to get a no bail release.
“Morality applies to intersecting belief communities with differing morals”
I follow you until the above.
What does “morality applies” mean? Are you using ‘morality’ to mean conformity to a set of rules for conduct? Does ‘intersecting’ boil down to disagreement?
I tend to think that government should stay out of issues of morality unless they lead to behaviors that are injurious to the society as a whole.
Yeah, so now it can be a D state that we now have to recuperate the votes for!
Does the same standard apply to, say, slavery? If so, then you need to ask the same about direct election of senators, women's franchise, voting age of 18, and due incorporation of due process/equal protection.
One would think a red state would enthusiastically support a ban on abortions, but Kansas, home of pro-abort former governor Kathleen Sebelius and the notorious late-term abortionist George Tiller, is a bit of a special case.
But... this is what the overturning of Roe V. Wade comes to... leaving the matter to the individual states.
Someone gets it! We’re going to have a blue wave this November. That should embarrass and humiliate all of us!
