BREAKING NEWS: House PASSES assault weapons ban 217-213: Two Republicans join all but five Democrats to move bill to the Senate - where it faces a very tough road to getting passed

The House passed an assault weapons ban Friday evening looking to give Democrats a last-minute win on their way out the door for August recess.

Five Democrats voted against the measure - Reps. Kurt Schrader, Ore., Vicente Gonzalez, Texas, Rep. Jared Golden, Maine and Rep. Ron Kind, R-Wisc.

Two Republicans voted for the measure - Reps. Chris Jacobs, N.Y., and Brian Fitzpatrick, Pa.

The ban cleared a procedural hurdle that allowed the House to move forward with expedited debate on Friday afternoon, with a final vote expected to follow. Three Democrats - Reps. Vicente Gonzalez, Texas, Jared Golden, Maine, and Kurt Schrader, Ore., voted 'no' with all Republicans, but the resolution passed 217 -211.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi meanwhile broke out a floor sign advertising AR-15s for children as she urged members to vote in favor of the ban.

'JR 15: Get 'em one like yours,' the ad reads, along with a photo of a child-sized AR-15.

'Our goal was to develop a shooting platform that was not only sized correctly, and safe, but also looks, feels and operates just like mom and dad's gun,' the ad continues.

The weapons manufacturer Wee 1 Tactics unveiled the 'JR-15' in January.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., expressed support for the child's semi-automatic weapon on Twitter.

Cause the left is mostly winning, the economy is in freefall, and that’s the truth?

That's not what you said.

You said: "I don’t think they’re going to wait long, this is getting rushed through. If it takes more than a week I’ll be surprised."

The problem is, you don't actually believe that.

If you do, then why the fear of a tag-line bet? It's just a tag-line, right?

There’s no “tough road.” It won’t pass the Senate.

Most hood shootings are with pistols anyway; can’t hide an AR down your pant leg.

Fitzpatrick’s vote doesn’t surprise me in the least. He is the lowest rated “Republican” in Congress, according to the American Conservative Union. Gun grabbers love him.

Never count on SCOTUS to do the right thing. Never assume that.

This must be killed in the Senate. If not, then there is absolutely no reason to vote for the R’s ... we might as well stay home and clean the rifles and prepare with other like minded individuals.

I pray that this country be split into 2 or 3 countries before my time is up.

In Marbury v. Madison the Supreme Court announced for the first time the principle that a court may declare an act of Congress void if it is inconsistent with the Constitution.

“One of the ordinary modes, by which tyrants accomplish their purposes without resistance is by disarming the people, and making it an offense to keep and bear arms.”

Joseph Story , Supreme Court Justice on the 2nd amendment

I seem to recall hearing good things about Golden, before. DeFazio is out after this term, which evidently freed him up to do the wrong thing. He was usually pretty good on guns and veteran’s issues when he needed to be re-elected.

The election isn’t until November. I think it’ll prove how wrong you are. The HOR will be in GOP control again and all this craziness will decrease dramatically. But the economic pain will continue for a long time, so hopefully the millennials who voted for the Dumbocrats will have finally learned a difficult lesson: don’t let progressives anywhere near power.

Maybe that’s why I find your negative sentiments so annoying. It’s like you don’t believe in the American spirit. We don’t take crap from our govt. lying down, although your comments make it sound like that’s your favorite position in life. 🤣

obama winning twice were strikes 1 and 2 against this ‘American spirit’ you are talking about. Biden finished it off for me.

Lots of conservatives said McCain had it in the bad, then Trump in 2020 just to have to eat a TON of crow. So I’ve seen how it’s not too wise to get invested in expecting good things out of politics.

Here is what a read about the bill. What you possess now is grandfathered in. There is about to be a run on these weapons. The source that I found is:

https://www.congress.gov/bill/117th-congress/house-bill/1808

This bill makes it a crime to knowingly import, sell, manufacture, transfer, or possess a semiautomatic assault weapon (SAW) or large capacity ammunition feeding device (LCAFD).

The prohibition does not apply to a firearm that is (1) manually operated by bolt, pump, lever, or slide action; (2) permanently inoperable; (3) an antique; or (4) a rifle or shotgun specifically identified by make and model.

The bill also exempts from the prohibition the following, with respect to a SAW or LCAFD:

importation, sale, manufacture, transfer, or possession related to certain law enforcement efforts, or authorized tests or experiments;
importation, sale, transfer, or possession related to securing nuclear materials; and
possession by a retired law enforcement officer.
The bill permits continued possession, sale, or transfer of a grandfathered SAW, which must be securely stored. A licensed gun dealer must conduct a background check prior to the sale or transfer of a grandfathered SAW between private parties.

The bill permits continued possession of, but prohibits sale or transfer of, a grandfathered LCAFD.

Newly manufactured LCAFDs must display serial number identification. Newly manufactured SAWs and LCAFDs must display the date of manufacture.

The bill also allows a state or local government to use Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program funds to compensate individuals who surrender a SAW or LCAFD under a buy-back program.

Takes more than a law to overcome an amendment to the constitution.

It takes another amendment.
