Secret Service investigators have discovered metadata showing text messages were sent and received on at least 10 agents' phones but were deleted
Investigators were working to determine whether the content of these texts contained information about the Capitol insurrection
Those text messages, members of the House select committee investigating January 6 say, should have been preserved amid an ongoing probe
The agency says the text messages may have been deleted accidentally amid a months-long data migration of its phones
It also now says it never received a copy of a Congressional letter asking it to preserve all records related to the Capitol insurrection

Before it was instructed to halt its investigation last week, the United States Secret Service found records of deleted text messages on or around January 6, 2021, stored on the phones of at least 10 agents.
Secret Service investigators discovered metadata showing that text messages were sent and received on at least 10 agents' phones in the days surrounding the Capitol riot - but have since been deleted, according to CNN.
Investigators were then working to determine whether the content of these texts contained information about the attempted insurrection, and whether they should have been preserved amid an ongoing House investigation into the riot, two unnamed sources told the network.
Among the text records the Department of Homeland Security Inspector General requested were those of the heads of the detail for both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence: Bobby Engel and Tim Giebels, respectively.
It's unclear whether they are included among the 10 personnel whose phones contained metadata showing records of deleted texts.

As someone ‘in the industry’, just know the carrier for those cell phones has a record of every text sent, but generally NOT the contents of the text. While policy varies by carrier, after 30 days the content of the texts are deleted.
Now, when I was closer to the government than I am now, all emails and texts were auto-archived.

Weird huh? For me, I get a text message, I read it, I delete it. I know it’s still floating out there in the ether but I can’t remember ever ‘saving’ a text message. Same with emails except for payment receipts which go in a folder.

Anyone who believes the NSA does not screen all domestic phone calls should do some serious re-thinking. Its operation in Utah now provides the data that previously (and presently) existing fascist governments could (and can)only dream of.
