Washington should assist in promoting a Russian-Ukrainian dialogue for peace instead of working towards including Russia in its list of state sponsors of terrorism, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Zhao Lijian said on Monday.
"The US should create favorable conditions to advance Russian-Ukrainian peace talks. Washington should take steps to facilitate a political settlement to the crisis in Ukraine," he said at a briefing replying to a question by TASS as to how officials in Beijing view the US government’s intention of labeling Russia as a sponsor of terrorism.
The Chinese diplomat said Beijing sees a peace deal as the only effective way to de-escalate in Ukraine.

If you know the history, the French invaded South Vietnam to save their “Rubber” Plantations because the NV were taking them over. When they couldn’t stop them, the French persuaded JFK that the US needed to send advisors to help them train the South Vietnam Army to protect their plantations and “STOP” the encroaching Soviet expansion. LBJ picked up the mantle and got the US fully involved. I have personal knowledge of what happened as I was stationed in the Navy during that time and I also had a brother who was a tank commander. They were told that they could not fire on the NVA when they were hidden in the rubber groves because if they did, the US had agreed to pay the French $ million for each rubber tree that they destroyed. It was very frustrating for our troops, naturally, because we all knew that it was a BS conflict from nearly the beginning and was really for commercial reasons. So, next time you see a car with Michelin tires, give them a good salute and thank LBJ and our Congresscritters for our involvement. But, hey, we stopped the spread of communism, didn’t we? //sarc intended// I fully expect to see American jets flying over Ukraine very soon. Biden (and many others) has major investments there that need to be protected.

That window is closed. I get that you don't want to hear it, but that's the way it is. They blew it. Had Russia demilitarized in the late 80s, early 90s, they could have taken advantage of global trends and built up a value added manufacturing economy in partnership with the West. There are now not enough young ethnic Russians left to bring the place back to population stability. Russia is past the demographic point of no return.

In large part this why Putin is trying to steal Ukraine. He needs those 40 million Ukrainians to become “Russians’ to avert the impending demographic suicide of European Russia.
What I couldn’t ignore is seeing our pilots come back in really bad shape. Air Navy saw what it did to our folks, not necessarily what it did to the enemy. So it was different kind of stress than the boots on the ground.
Anytime we could extract any pilot of a disabled aircraft that managed to ditch in salt water was a really big day for us.
(Not that I was a fan of John McCain.)
