President Zelenskyy has consolidated all TV platforms in Ukraine into one state broadcast and restricted political rivals. Political opposition fears such civil liberty constraints could continue.
JUANA SUMMERS, HOST:
Ukraine has had to take extraordinary measures to fight Russia's invasion. Among them, the government has consolidated the country's television outlets and dissolved rival political parties. It says it needs to do this to maintain a united front in fighting Russia. NPR's Emily Feng reports from Kyiv.

Lincoln closed down more than 300 newspapers.
During the Civil War the federal government was responsible for the greatest amount of newspaper suppression in the nation's history. More than 300 newspapers were shut down, most of them Democratic papers that were sympathetic to the Confederacy.

We're in one right here and you haven't a clue.
You are absolutely correct!
“...Putin will not be able to win in Russia until he fully mobilizes...”
A full mobilization will not end Russia’s troop morale problem. It will increase the discontent. The forced conscripts in the Donbas have been reluctant soldiers and some have suffered torture at the hands of the Russians while so many others have been killed in combat by the armed forces of the Ukraine. The cemetery in Alchevsk has a huge section of local conscripts who came home as cadavers.
You say it is hilarious nonsense, but it is an undisputed fact.
I don’t know how we’re supposed to have a discussion when you’re that far gone.
Maybe you can find someone else willing to discuss the reality that only exist in your head
And just how many seats did the Fascist Party have in the British Parliament during WW2?
Zelensky has banned the biggest opposition parties with the most opposition seats in Ukraine under the pretense of “they support Russia”.
Also, the UK maintained its legal hostility toward Sinn Fein which collaborated with the Nazis. The IRA had a relationship with Abwehr and helped in targeting Belfast docks.
Sinn Fein continued to have seats i parliament in Westminster, despite being the “political wing” of the terrorist IRA even during the IRA bombings which nearly killed Margaret Thatcher.
It’s been widely reported that very few ethic Russians from Moscow and St. Pete are getting killed in Ukraine. Putin uses non ethic Russian cannon fodder from the economically depressed provinces instead. That is a blatantly racist policy.
Conscripted Ukrainian cannon fodder are not spearheading this war no matter how much Putininsts want to push that fairy tale. It was Russians from Moscow who stole Crimea at gun point. Putin gave them medals in thanks. The current situation is no different.
More than 1/3rd of the troops the Ukrainian government are fighting against are... Ukrainians.
You say it is hilarious nonsense, but it is an undisputed fact. You can dream and wishcast whatever reality you want, but that’s objective fact.
They are a mix of Volunteers and Conscripts, just like the Ukrainian government has.
Chamberlain wasn't funded by the nazis. Victor Medvechuk the leader of the banned pro-Russian party was getting funding from Russia.
Half a continent away, in the sunny European offshore haven of Cyprus, a secretive deal was being struck: A large stake in Yug Energo, owner of a lucrative Russian oil refinery, was sold at bargain rates to companies linked to Ukraine’s leading pro-Russia opposition politician Viktor Medvedchuk and his longtime business partner, member of parliament Taras Kozak. Credit: Opposition Platform - For Life Medvedchuk and Taras Kozak (right) at a meeting in Moscow last year with Russian parliamentary leaders.
An investigation by the Ukrainian RFE/RL program Schemes and OCCRP has found that the companies linked to Medvedchuk and Kozak were able to secure a 42-percent stake in Yug Energo from Russian billionaire Sergey Kislov for barely more than $40,000 — a tiny fraction of what the men would make from the deal over the coming years.
The Yug Energo stake entitled Medvedchuk and Kozak to a large portion of the profits from the Novoshakhtinsky oil refinery, a half-billion-dollar facility completed a few years earlier in Russia’s southern Rostov region. These dividends would amount to tens of millions of dollars, bolstering Medvedchuk’s finances as he staged a political comeback and helped set up and finance Ukraine’s biggest pro-Russian political party, Opposition Platform — For Life.

Correct.
“This kind of corruption is hardly specific to Ukraine”
This statement cracks me up, because it implies Ukraine is not more corrupt than anywhere else. Every country has corruption, so every country is equally corrupt.
But the reality is absolutely the opposite.
Ukraine is dramatically more corrupt than most countries.
I’m sure the government going after Poroshenko for corruption has nothing to do with the fact that he’s the leader of the major opposition party.
After all none of the other members of parliament are not corruption so there is no targeting going on to ensure one party rule at all.
You talk about refugees, what you don’t consider is that a large number of these are conscription age men who fled to avoid the Ukrainian government draft...
Ukraine recently has sent letters to European governments seeking lists of Ukrainian men who fled to their country between the ages of 18-65, those without major health problems...
Chamberlain signed a peace treaty with Hitler. Victor Medvechuk the leader of the Ukraine opposition hasn't even come close to doing such a thing with Putin.
Poroshenko was anti-Russian...but knew who buttered his bread. He just let everything ride. Just as much a dictator as Zelensky.
America will be known as one of the great defenders of dictators around the world.
Churchill once described Mosley as the most dynamic rising politician in the UK. He was certainly someone a “come to terms with Hitler “ movement could coalesce around, particularly in the dark days of 1940 after the defeat of France & Dunkirk. Such a faction did exist for awhile in Parliament. Churchill clearly felt leaving Mosley free was too big a chance to take.
There are always different views in most countries as to whether to start a new war or not. That’s the democratic way.
Wars are terrible things.
Just look at the terrible cost of the Ukraine war so far, not just in money, but in lives lost, destruction, inflation in the west etc etc.
“Putin uses non ethic Russian cannon fodder from the economically depressed provinces instead. That is a blatantly racist policy.”
I guess you think the whole world is blatantly racist, because there isn’t any conscription effort in the entire world that hasn’t disproportionately affected the poor.
In Russia there is universal conscription, with some educational and medical exemptions. Of course wealthier people and those from more education focused provinces are more likely to quality for these exemptions.
Was the same in the USA...
As for the Buryat and Chechen, yes they are heavily represented in this war.
Not because of conscription, but because they sign contracts.
Yes there are economic reasons why they sign these contracts more in economically depressed areas.
In the case of Chechnya there might be cultural reasons also why they join... The people signing now can see the people returning on rotations and decide for themselves if it is for them.
“It was Russians from Moscow who stole Crimea at gun point.”
Did you notice there was no battle or fighting for Crimea at all?
Several Ukrainian Navy captains voluntarily handed over their vessels.
Crimea is the most pro-Russian part of what was once Ukraine, by far.
