SAN RAMON, California — Chevron intends to sell its vast headquarters campus in San Ramon, keep its head offices in the same East Bay city and shift jobs to Texas, a move that could deal a fresh blow to the Bay Area economy.
The energy giant said it will cover relocation costs for some employees to move from San Ramon to Texas.
“Chevron plans to sell our Chevron Park campus and move to new modern leased space in San Ramon,” the oil titan said in comments emailed to this news organization.
...
“Chevron will remain headquartered in California, where the company has a 140-year history and operations and partnerships throughout the state,” the company said.

Heck, I was surprised to learn Chevron had an HQ in Kali.
> What is the over/under on how long before Blue States start demanding a law to prevent this type of thing or pass state laws to try and stop it ?? <
A number of years ago there was a bill in the California legislature to tax wealthy individuals who left the state, even after they left. Let that sink in. The bill’s sponsors wanted to force such a person to pay California taxes even if he lived exclusively in, say, Florida.
I don’t think the bill passed. But hey, California. Why not try again?

“ California has been an oil producer since the late 19th century. By the early 20th century, 40% of our oil came from California. The fact, that one of California’s historic major industries is leaving is a big deal...and long past due”
Not anymore - libs have prevented drilling in California for ions there’s virtually NOTHING producing in CA in the domestic well database (and production database) of 3.2 million wells I managed for decades 🤪
Unfortunately their liberal votes come with them.
Our son just moved here from Calif to Texas. Our entire ‘hood moved here from Calif to Texas, or at least most of them. We moved from Calif to Texas in 2013... My sister moved from Calif to Texas. We couldn’t get here fast enough!
Our son’s church has almost all of the members here in Texas from California. Some are new here, some moved here in the 1990s and other times when there was a downturn in Calif. So far everyone we have met is conservative and came to Texas for the Right reasons.
A lot of Californians have moved to super nice parts of Mexico - like San Miguel de Allende. We went to a concert that featured Doc Severinson {Tonight Show fame} and he had moved to San Miguel de Allende, this was years ago.
Almost 100% of the people I have met here in Texas who moved here from California are conservative. THAT is WHY they are moving here. The only ones I don’t know if they are conservatives are the ones I didn’t ask! They are escaping the bad part of California politics, etc. They want Texas freedom and no state income tax. And many are getting involved in conservative LOCAL politics like school boards...

My guess leaving their headquarters in the Bay Area is a Tactical Retreat. They will leave a shell of an organization to cover them while they move to Texas and once that is complete they will relocate their headquarters.
California politicians are vindictive.

[If you could afford to live in the Bay Area, would you WANT to live there? “Kings” typically like to live in nice places, all else being equal.
I surmise this has more to do with all the legal headaches in moving a corporate entity.]
“...to close their refinery at Richmond.”
What state?
Our son just moved to Texas from California in February-March. It was hard and expensive to get a U Haul or a mover to move TO Texas - they were all Full. But if you wanted to move to California - you could get a deal! This might be a new industry....Work for U Haul or a mover who needs trucks driven back to California. Not Kidding.
If they are going to pay to relocate employees they need to administer a political ideology first. Texas is getting too many liberals.
For cost to ship putting them on trains would probably be cheaper.
“ It’s a beautiful area, and ritzy area. One of my sisters lived nearby and the homes are very expensive. ”
Opportunity for homeless housing. All the facilities are right there - food, medical, shelter, entertainment venues.
Like I said, long past due.
Elon Musk did the same thing. I think as another poster said, it’s hard to move the whole company name and headquarters at one time. It kinda says they want to get out of Dodge ASAP.
CA DID tax tax retirees who left the state for many years.
It was called “Source Tax” and required an act of Congress to end it.
Nothing CA tries to pick the pockets of everyone should be a surprise.
I remember when they sent an official demand to NV that they refund CA all the money NV casinos earned from CA residents.
An exit tax would be no surprise.
So if leaving get your assets out first.
They probably don’t want to be targeted while they wind down operations and “Chevon moving HQ to red state” puts a huge target on their back. Once everything is sold they can just turn out the lights at the leased space and skedaddle.
According to family history, my great grandfather almost bought a huge chunk of property in Signal Hill, California. He backed out at the last minute because he was concerned about how he would get water to his cows. About 20 years later, Signal Hill became Signal Oil.
I wonder if these companies see CA splitting from the country and do not want to get stuck in the split?
