There were also stories to the effect that historically neutral Switzerland, and even Austria, have expressed interest in joining NATO. I don’t know if that is true; but, if it is, that makes it clear that Russia is considered aggressive and unstable and a threat to peace.

If NATO encroaching on Soviet boundaries was the justification for Russia invading the Ukraine, even though five NATO countries already bordered Russia, wouldn’t Finland’s admission to NATO also give Russia justification for invading and taking over Finland, too? Asking for a friend.
