Trustees for the Forney Independent School District got an earful from parents Monday night after the district released a new dress code last week that bans hoodies, denim, dresses, skirts and/or 'skorts' for a large number of students.
It was the first board meeting since the district released the new 7-page dress code. A petition...to change or do away with the new dress code has already reached over 5,000 signatures.
Per the district, no clothing with hoods is allowed any longer inside schools. That includes hoodies or jackets and coats with hoods. Dresses, skirts, and skorts are only allowed for pre-k through 4th grade students only.
In the statement below, Forney ISD rationalized why the dress code was changing:
"The use of a school dress code is established to improve student self-esteem, bridge socioeconomic differences among students, and promote positive behavior, thereby enhancing school safety and improving the learning environment."
The district also said in a video that the new dress code would help teach professionalism.
Hollaman wore a dress to Monday's meeting, addressing the board about the new dress code to prove that many successful women wear dresses and skirts daily.
"I don't agree with it," Hollaman said. "Hopefully, they'll change their mind, a lot of people are on my side right now. I think the dress code is unfair, and I'm wearing this dress tonight to contradict what the district is stating."
Forney Mayor Pro-Tem James Traylor spoke before the board, as well. Traylor has a daughter within the district.
"I don't think any man should be telling a woman what they should wear," Traylor said. "I work with women daily, and they wear dresses, skirts, and they're professional."
"I think this is asinine," Traylor said.

Axiom:
Cultural, Political, and Religious neutrality in any school is impossible! Such a state of philosophic neutrality can **not** exist in the mind of any sentient human.
Therefore:
When government runs a tax-compelled and compulsory attendance schools, factions of society will be at each others’ throats battling for the cultural, political, and religious souls of their children.
If somebody came in in a hijab, would the dress code apply. How ‘bout a Muslim man in a thobe and/or wearing a turban?
Exactly!
It is impossible to satisfy the cultural, political, and religious beliefs of every segment of society. Neutrality is impossible.
I can understand this. Make the uniform the same for all kids. It just alleviates so many problems.
Put every child in long pants, a golf.short and black sneakers with white sock.
Do the same thing with hair. If it touches the collar then tie it back. No dangling ear rings, no cosmetics. Same rule for both genders.
K through 12 and beyond put them all on the uniform.. it’s actually cheaper than regular clothes and nobody can pick on anybody else for the clothes they’re wearing cuz they’re wearing them too.
I didn’t used to think like that until people started getting mugged and shot for their fancy bball shoes...
Recall them

“Dresses, skirts, and skorts are only allowed for pre-k through 4th grade students only.”
When I was in high school girls were allowed to wear miniskirts and slacks were banned.
Our very cute 22 yo Spanish teacher would sit on her desk with crossed legs showing most of her thighs. Her brother was in our class and sat quietly but red-faced.
Ridiculous. Many women are not comfortable in pants. There is no excuse for compelling girls to wear pants when traditionally they wear skirts & dresses. Why not insist the boys wear dresses? Would that be OK?
“Dresses, skirts, and skorts are only allowed for pre-k through 4th grade students only.”
Geez, I can remember when girls were required to wear dresses at school, with slacks only allowed if the official temperature at the airport was 32F or below at 7am. Jeans were not allowed for either guys or girls under any circumstances.
They are banning denim because professionalism. Hate to yell them my big corporation has gone to smart casual bd its decent jeans all the time unless you’re meeting a client.
Allow school choice and let the schools do what they want ... easy peasy ...
Ah good. A tie down ring. Very handy for securing to the tarmac when winds are strong.
The nose ring fails the “no dangling” rule.
