The Man Most Responsible for Ending Roe Worries That It Could Hurt His Party
The New York Times ^ | June 24, 2022 | Maggie Haberman and Michael C. Bender

Posted on 06/25/2022 8:31:59 AM PDT by MinorityRepublican

The end of the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling was the culmination of decades of work by Republicans and social conservatives — one that came to pass only after a former Democrat from New York who had once supported abortion rights helped muscle through three Supreme Court justices.

Publicly, former President Donald J. Trump heralded the Supreme Court’s ruling on Friday ending federal abortion protections as a victory. Yet, as he faces possible prosecution over his efforts to subvert the 2020 election and prepares for a likely 2024 presidential campaign, Mr. Trump has privately told friends and advisers the ruling will be “bad for Republicans.”

When a draft copy of the decision leaked in May, Mr. Trump began telling friends and advisers that it would anger suburban women, a group who helped tilt the 2020 race to President Biden, and would lead to a backlash against Republicans in the November midterm elections.

In other conversations, Mr. Trump has told people that measures like the Texas state law banning most abortions after six weeks and allowing citizens to file lawsuits against people who enable abortions are “so stupid,” according to a person with direct knowledge of the discussions. The Supreme Court let the measure stand in December 2021.

For the first hours after the decision was made public on Friday, Mr. Trump was muted in response, a striking contrast to the conservatives who worked in his administration, including former Vice President Mike Pence. Mr. Pence issued a statement saying, “Life won,” as he called for abortion opponents to keep fighting “in every state in the land.”

That was always the problem with abortion as a motivating tool... what do we do if we win? Suddenly the republicans have that much less motivation to go to the polls, and the democrats that much more. I’m sure those in charge in both parties saw THAT coming years ago.

You have different blocs in the Republican Party. Pro-life bloc isn't the biggest one but it's an influential one as you can see. Right now MAGA is in charge. Trump supports pro-life but it's not his bread and butter.

For the Left, Roe vs Wade is the equivalent of the 2nd Amendment to the Right.

Insane inflation
Gas prices almost triple
Home heating bills astronomical this winter
Recession headed our way
Layoffs on the horizon
401K’s halved
crime out of control

They won’t give a thought to the ruling with all this going on, despite the media’s lies.

If the only point is winning is winning, it is right to worry about how this decision will impact the party.

If the point of winning is getting stuff done, this is a wise use of the win, and worth doing.

Frankly, I think accomplishing things is good for the party. We should try to do more of that.

BS, fake news from the New York Times. Why do we even post something from them without an AUTOMATIC BARF ALERT ?!

TRUMP campaigned on this, won because that is what WE wanted, selected judges that would get the job done, and they did. Another promise kept. You really believe Trump doesn’t celebrate WINNING !?

There are videos on Trump where he said he was pro-choice. His daughter is very liberal. He knew he had to be pro-life to get elected in 2016. And he didn't feel too passionate about it either way so it was easy for him to switch postions on this.

Female voters are not happy about ending Roe vs Wade and they'll vote for the blue team in November.

Lump all women into one monolithic bloc, whydoncha. Just so happens there are millions of women (and men) who are not rabid fans of abortion. As for me, I'm a woman who doesn't give a fig what abortion-rabid women will do with their votes. I'll do my part and vote for Republicans.

I used to be pro death too. Both he and his daughter are no longer pro death. He would have NEVER picked justices that would specifically rule against RvW if he was pro death.

I heard that many pro-lifers will be energized, who would have been deflated if the decision had gone the other way

“I think the Dobbs decision will primarily be a driving factor in districts that are already +10(D).”

If true, that’s all well and good at the House level but there are such things as statewide elections too — and increased turnout in the ghetto Democrat districts and suburban soccer mommy Democrat districts is obviously not going to be beneficial to Republican chances in those races.

Those who say this ruling will have NO impact on Democrat and RINO (i.e., pro-abortionist) turnout in November are probably the same fools who believed that 2020 would be a landslide because Trump had all the “enthusiasm” on his side and Basement Biden had none whatsoever.

Despite mountains of evidence, they still refuse to understand that voting AGAINST someone (Trump) or something (Supreme Court ruling) is a great motivator — particularly for liberal snowflakes who are so easily emotionally manipulated 24/7 by the media.

We’ve seen minor examples of such things on the right too. Were GOP voters in 2008 and 2012 really voting FOR stumblebums like McCain and Romney or were we really voting AGAINST Bonzo the Wonder Chimp?

In 2008 some of us could say we were voting FOR Sarah Palin despite McCain’s presence on the ticket, but voting against Bonzo was the primary factor for most.

Hatred can be a fantastic motivator, and nobody spreads hatred (of Republicans) like the media, and nobody is more susceptible to propaganda than brainless liberal snowflakes.

If people blindly refuse to accept 2020 as a great example of that, then perhaps they still remember the 2018 “Blue Wave”? It wasn’t all just “fraud, fraud, fraud”, it was a ton of hatred directed at President Trump, and it worked brilliantly, as Democrat turnout broke all records for a midterm election (yes, R turnout was up too — not nearly as much though).

Most pro life activists are also women. Just sayin’.

I think that staunchly blue areas will remain blue, and “one issue” leftist pro choice voters will vote democrat, but they would have anyway.
