Although Cuenca has escaped the disruption and violence suffered by other major cities during the first nine days of the indigenous anti-government strike, that appeared to be changing Wednesday.

The 31-year old man was found lifeless at the side of the highway and some protesters believe he was struck by a gas canister. The man was pronounced dead on the scene, his body taken to the public morgue for an autopsy.

Chamber President Manolo Solis said the decision was made due to "increasingly dangerous circumstances for drivers and passengers".

Solis said that protesters had boarded and detained two buses Wednesday morning at the El Vado bridge entrance to the historic district...

Okay, I read the article and I have no idea why this is happening. Can anyone give me the twenty-five words or less perspective?

The protest now in its tenth day economics higher fuel prices in the country cited along with opposition to “Conservative” President Guillermo Lasso.

The protest spearheaded by the indigenous minority of some one million in a country of 15 million.

An umbrella organization of the indiegenous people CONAIE leading the protest and calling on the government to back down from a state of emergency before talks can be held with it.

Protest leader is Leonidas Iza who was arrested and released eight days ago.

Looks like the Left in Ecuador using the economic mess to hit back at the Right President Mr. Lasso

Thanks.

Yes, the Russian war is causing chaos, but I’d bet that if Trump were president A. the Russian war wouldn’t have happened, at least not as it is currently going and, B. We’d still have cheap gas and the world would be a lot calmer place.

As for a minority causing problems, diversity is our enemy.

Eucador has a Left and a Right I’m glad the Left gave Julian Assange refuge when it was in power but eventually the US arm twisted Ecuador.

And then the Right came to power and made COVID shots mandatory.

So these folks are trying to topple that government of the Right and of COVID tyranny and I’m rather ambivalent.

I’m a right winger all the way but unfortunately the right wing in Equador supports and engages in the destuction of the rainforest. The Amazon rainforests are the heart and lungs of the earth we all should be horrified of this holocaust.

Cuenca is the spiritual home of the Panama hat. True Panamas are formed from a “blank” of woven toquilla palm, and as far back as the early 16th Century the Cuenaca-area locals were noted by the Spanish Conquistadors to have been wearing hats made from woven palm. It still is home to the largest concentration of toquilla palm weavers in existence.

They’re called “Panama” hats because that was the first place where the Ecuadorean hat-makers managed to sell them to outsiders in large numbers.
