Cuenca is the spiritual home of the Panama hat. True Panamas are formed from a “blank” of woven toquilla palm, and as far back as the early 16th Century the Cuenaca-area locals were noted by the Spanish Conquistadors to have been wearing hats made from woven palm. It still is home to the largest concentration of toquilla palm weavers in existence.

They’re called “Panama” hats because that was the first place where the Ecuadorean hat-makers managed to sell them to outsiders in large numbers.
