CNN opinion writer Peniel Joseph argued Friday that Juneteenth is just as much "America's true birthday" as the Fourth of July.
Joseph, a social justice activist and University of Texas at Austin professor, said the June 19 holiday "matters now more than ever," claiming that former president Donald Trump and the Republican Party are causing "fear, anger, and anxiety about Black citizenship."
Few people knew about Juneteenth, which commemorates the 1865 date on which slaves in Texas learned they were free, until mainstream media in 2020 blasted Trump for holding a rally on the day. Trump later postponed his rally "out of respect." Juneteenth last year became a federal holiday thanks to historic Republican-sponsored legislation.
Joseph particularly took issue with a Florida bill that bans schools from teaching that "members of one race, color, sex, or national origin are morally superior," which he said prevents students from learning about systemic racism. He also repeated the popular and incorrect talking point that "so-called critical race theory" is a "made-up controversy." Schools across the country have taught critical race theory, which prioritizes race as a lens for looking at the world, the Washington Free Beacon reported.
Joseph is not the only public figure to promote alternatives to American traditions. The NFL committed last year to playing a "black national anthem," the hymn "Lift Every Voice and Sing," before the U.S. national anthem at football games.

“Juneteenth” sounds like pidgin-English aka Ebonics.

He can say and do whatever he likes, the government can declare this so but it will never change my mind or heart.

There may be a reason CNN has achieved its lowest viewership.
Because America is all about 12% of its population.
Between the Black National Anthem, Juneteenth, and other black crap, this is nothing but an insurrection against the country. This is an attempt to displace all things “white”.
I saw an interview years ago with Rush’s old producer Bo Snerdly, and he said he doesn’t celebrate the 4th either. He says it’s your holiday.
I vote for Kwanza to be the new 4th.
Does his name represent what he prefers when it comes to his sexual lifestyle?
With that name, he was doomed to be mentally deficient and insane.
On one hand, I would say: “Stop caring about CNN, for crawsakes! They are lower than dirt!” but on the other hand, I would say: “Wow, if you are considering sending your kid to college for journalism, THINK AGAIN. How do these folks manage to stay employed when their popularity is so nowhere?
They have had low, low viewer ratings (and this is assuming most of the people polled watch TV and at least know who CNN is, although nothing is assured in any scientific discipline these days) for forever now. How can they stay in business? If it seemed there were people who really WANTED to view their product, it would be understandable. But if one believes the data, no one watches, no one cares, no one pays for them, and yet they’re still there - how is that achieved, exactly?
A year into Juneteenth and people already don’t care. I wouldn’t be surprised if Republican polticians voted in agreement with this since they are cowards
