Road Trip: Marine Corps Air Station New River, North Carolina

NCmcasnewriver3

Marine Corps Air Station New River is a United States Marine Corps helicopter and tilt-rotor base in Jacksonville, North Carolina, in the eastern part of the state. In 1972, the airfield was named McCutcheon Field for General Keith B. McCutcheon, one of the fathers of Marine Corps helicopter aviation. Near Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, it shares some facilities with Camp Geiger.

The Air Station was the first Marine Corps base with the new MV-22 Osprey. It has the ability to fly like a plane, and take off and land like a helicopter. The MV-22 has replaced all of the CH-46E Sea Knights on the east coast with the exception of HMX-1 and HMM-774. Currently there are six operational Osprey squadrons, VMM-261, VMM-263, VMM-162, VMM-365, VMM-266, and VMMT-204.

NCmcasnewriver5

The mission of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing is to conduct air operations in support of the Marine Forces to include offensive air support, antiair warfare, assault support, aerial reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and control of aircraft and missiles.

NCmcasnewriver4

The Osprey is the world's first production tiltrotor aircraft, with one three-bladed proprotor, turboprop engine, and transmission nacelle mounted on each wingtip. It is classified as a powered lift aircraft by the Federal Aviation Administration. For takeoff and landing, it typically operates as a helicopter with the nacelles vertical and rotors horizontal.

Once airborne, the nacelles rotate forward 90° in as little as 12 seconds for horizontal flight, converting the V-22 to a more fuel-efficient, higher speed turboprop aircraft. STOL rolling-takeoff and landing capability is achieved by having the nacelles tilted forward up to 45°. Other orientations are possible. Pilots describe the V-22 in airplane mode as comparable to the C-130 in feel and speed. It has a ferry range of over 2,100 nmi. Its operational range is 1,100 nmi.

Composite materials make up 43% of the airframe, and the proprotor blades also use composites. For storage, the V-22's rotors fold in 90 seconds and its wing rotates to align, front-to-back, with the fuselage. Because of the requirement for folding rotors, their 38-foot diameter is 5 feet less than optimal for vertical takeoff, resulting in high disk loading.

Most missions use fixed wing flight 75% or more of the time, reducing wear and tear and operational costs. This fixed wing flight is higher than typical helicopter missions allowing longer range line-of-sight communications for improved command and control.

Hope Cuts through Storms

Bible in a Year:

He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.

Psalm 107:29

In the spring of 2021, several storm-chasers recorded videos and took photos of a rainbow next to a tornado in Texas. In one video, long stalks of wheat in a field bent under the power of the whirling winds. A brilliant rainbow cut across the gray skyline and arched toward the twister. Bystanders in another video stood on the side of the road and watched the symbol of hope standing firm beside the twisting funnel-shaped cloud.

In Psalm 107, the psalmist offers hope and encourages us to turn to God during difficult times. He describes some who were in the middle of a storm, “at their wits’ end” (v. 27). “Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress” (v. 28).

God understands His children will sometimes struggle to feel hopeful when life feels like a storm. We need reminders of His faithfulness, especially when the horizon looks dark and tumultuous.

Whether our storms come as substantial obstacles in our lives, as emotional turmoil, or as mental stress, God can still our storms “to a whisper” and guide us to a place of refuge (vv. 29–30). Though we may not experience relief in our preferred way or time, we can trust God to keep the promises He’s given in Scripture. His enduring hope will cut through any storm.

Reflect & Pray Reflect & Pray

How have you experienced or seen a difference between sincere and self-serving love? How can a community of faith help us learn to love others wholeheartedly?

Loving God, help me to learn the difference between real and counterfeit love and to share Christ’s love with those around me.

Howdy, Kathy.

I thought you might get some rain this morning but, alas, the clouds broke up. Darn the luck.

I hope Momma had all six of her brood with her today.

Howdy, luvie.

I hope y’all are still staying out of the triple digits.

A bit on the warm side here but not all that bad. Not quite as hot as predicted and we hope that holds the next two days, which will be the hottest of the week.

Well darn. It would be so nice to get through the summer without a loss but it won’t be this summer. :-(

The sky over the mountains looked promising for rain earlier in the day. The sun was out at the airport earlier than at your house apparently. It’s been bright there for quite a while.

A freshly-coiffed lawn? May it bring on the rain! LOL

Hey there, radu!

We have stayed out of the triple digits. And with low humidity, the temp “feels” even better. Kinda nice, and I never thought I’d say that about the 90s. LOL!

I’m glad you weren’t as hot as it was supposed to be. What a relief that must be. I hope it stays livable. I’m so tired of summer.

Glad to hear you’re getting a little break. Every little bit helps.

We touched 90 briefly this afternoon and were forecast to have mid 90s. The next two days are supposed to be close to 100 and we’ll see how that goes. The humidity is lower this week and that helps.
We’re looking forward to next week when this heat wave is supposed to break at last.
