Police: 1 dead, 2 hurt in Alabama church shooting The Associated Press

VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. (AP) — A shooting at a church in a suburb of one of Alabama’s major cities left one person dead and two others wounded Thursday evening, police said, adding a suspect was taken into custody.

The shooting occurred at Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church in the Birmingham suburb of Vestavia Hills, Vestavia Hills Police Capt. Shane Ware said at a briefing. He said multiple law enforcement officers rushed to the site after dispatchers received a call of an active shooter at 6:22 p.m.

He said one person was dead and two others were wounded in the shooting and had been hospitalized. A suspect was in custody, but Ware declined to identify the person or the victims or describe how events unfolded.

Numerous law enforcement agents, along with emergency crews, were at the scene past night fall and the emergency vehicles with lights flashing blocked the road to the site. Yellow police crime scene tape was quickly put up.

The Rev. Kelley Hudlow, an Episcopal priest in the Alabama diocese, told broadcast outlet WBRC that the church and the community were stunned by the shooting.

“It is shocking. Saint Stephen’s is a communty built on love and prayers,” she said in a live interview with the TV station. “People of all faiths are coming together to pray for healing … for those in the hospital.”

She added that the church was receiving messages from people all over the United States and the world who were “praying for us tonight. We need everyobody out there. Pray, think, meditate and send love to this community because we are going to need all of it.”

The church’s website had listed a “Boomers Potluck” being held Thursday night. “There will be no program, simply eat and have time for fellowship,” the flyer reads.

National leaders are so focused on gun control they have taken their eyes of the real problem - the shooter. How are we to take the psychotics who kill off the street - the crazies. There will always be crimes of passion, but that is not what these shooters are about. They are people with black souls and everyone around them knows it. Mental health practitioners are wrapped in sexuality matters of all kinds and are neglecting this societal cancer festering, the psychotic who kills. Let that be the focus, forget the guns.

I’m not thrilled about that, but shooting people is not right, no matter who they are.

So far the main answer is so called “red flag” laws. If that’s it, then no from me.
There is no due process, no accountability and no control if in fact some one is really mentally unfit or not. Anyone can file a complaint and that person in the complaint loses his gun rights.
Do not think red flag laws will be not be used in this manner. They are salivating at the prospect. That’s why the dumblecrats are on board with the idea and wetting themselves that they might get pubbie support. Pass those and you will see.

By then, it’s too late.

I do not know the answer...but some “minority report” approach doesn’t feel right to me.

A man calling himself “Mr. Smith” was sitting alone and a longtime church member approached him and invited him to sit at a table, said the Rev. Doug Carpenter, who founded the church in 1973 and retired in 2005.

“Mr. Smith” refused to join them and later pulled out a handgun and shot three people, Carpenter said.

Jim Musgrove, a church member, hit the shooter with a chair and wrestled the gun away from him, Carpenter said.

There were about 25 people at the Boomers’ Potluck dinner, Carpenter said.

No one at the dinner knew “Mr. Smith,” who claimed he was a former member. “We’re trying to figure out who he is,” Carpenter said.
