Florida utility aims to eliminate carbon emissions by 2045

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Florida’s largest electricity provider has announced plans to eliminate its carbon emissions by 2045 by halting its fossil fuel usage and greatly increasing its reliance on solar energy, including using it to turn water into hydrogen to power its generating plants.

Florida Power & Light, which serves 5.7 million homes and businesses or about half the state, said the multibillion dollar plan will not result in any price increases beyond what would be anticipated normally.

FPL’s parent company, NextEra Energy, said in its announcement this week that when its “Real Zero” plan is fully implemented 23 years from now, 83% of the utility’s electricity will be generated by solar, including “green hydrogen,” or come from battery storage from periods when excess power is produced.

Green hydrogen is a process where solar power is used to break apart water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. That hydrogen is then used as a fuel source, eliminating the company’s use of natural gas. Most of the solar facilities will be built on converted, unused farmland in the central part of the state.

The company says another 16% of FPL’s power will be generated by its two current nuclear plants and 1% from renewable natural gas, which is created from biomass such as plant waste. It has set five-year goals starting in 2025 that it says will allow environmental groups and others to audit its progress. The plan still must be approved by the state utility commission.

Highly unlikely they will ever be able to hit those targets.
Unless they mandate everyone turn off their AC.

There’s not a lot of unoccupied land in FL. Where are they going to put that many solar panels?

Allow the utility zero rate increases based on costly global warming junk science. No nuclear + no fossil fuels = no rate increases.

The plan still must be approved by the state utility commission.

They are probably counting on the State Utility Commission to shoot their plan down. This way they can virtue signal to the left and environmental groups so they leave them alone all the while producing power from real sources.

Sounds really good on paper ... now let’s see them execute it ... set up a penalty clause so that they can’t charge any more than comparable hydrocarbon plants.

… Where are they going to put that many solar panels? …

On residential roofs. Just like California.

This is unusual for a company that has a history of corporate sanity and generally gives first-rate service to their customers. I lived in Florida for 25 years and have zero complaints. And their hurricane response is better than excellent.

I hope that they are planning on certifying 6-8 nuclear plants to reach their goals.

Florida utility aims to eliminate carbon emissions by 2045 by ditching cheap abound and energy sources and installing expensive alternatives

Environmental wackos use the word ‘carbon’ for carbon dioxide. It is one of the many ways they try to dumb down the hoax (global warming, global cooling, climate change, climate crisis, etc.)

Most of life on Earth is carbon based. C02 is Plant Food.

One could edit the headline to read:

Florida utility aims to eliminate plant food emissions by 2045 (and thus destroy the biosphere).

Another headline edit could be:

Florida utility aims to eliminate oxygen emissions by 2045 (since the plants use the C02 and produce oxygen).

Their plan is that you must use their solar. The PSC is being asked to change the minimum charge from FPL from 10 dollars to 168 dollars if you are using your own solar. mine as well just buy from them. How are they going to shut down the giant coal plant near Orlando? it's the only thing that keeps Joe Mancin vote to fund NASA KSC. Everyone from Florida knows that cheap energy = good times in Florida with tourists and air conditioning. I remember when we got our 1st window AC in 1964, boy was it easier to sleep at night. And no pesky mosquito's coming through the tear in the screen.

Broward here is basically uninhabitable without AC. It’s such a false unnatural existence. I really despise relying on climate control apparatus to live here.

Then comes October.
