I don’t see any sheep herders here in upstate anymore either.
A story about Howard Johnson’s should include Jacques Pepin - he was invited to work in the Kennedy White House, but turned it down to work at HoJo’s instead.
Saers - was Amazon by catalog before the internet-
“Satisfaction guranteed or your money back”
Painted on the glass above the front entrance.
Lifetime warranty on tools. Busted? bring it in and get another.
Rock solid electric tools. Still have some. 40+ years old
Indestructible appliances, and a entire parts department so you wanted to fix it yourself if something went wrong.
New black top Jeepers every year for Basketball Season.
Car care, boats, motors and fishing gear, bluejeans called em “dungarees” back then, everything.
And Woolworths had what they didn’t, including Budgies, Ice Cream sundaes and fabric by the bolt.
Oh yea.
Woolworth’s had yarn and sewing patterns and tools, too.
When you heard the brand names Kenmore and Craftsman, quality first came to mind.
Yes, there are. They are now called Democrat politicians.
I loved those fried clams. Even when wife and I didn’t have a lot of money, we knew we could get a good meal at HoJo’s.
Did you ever see Blazing Saddles?
I think the generation that built those great icons passed away, and was replaced by a generation that was inferior to its predecessors. Its sharp American instincts and values were first undermined, then corrupted, and finally obliterated. The new generation acquired a different set of skills and values, and because of that either could not or would not assume guardianship of these old icons, and turned its attention to newer ventures.
I love the shows when he works with his granddaughter....and his daughter.
He’s a treasure. Unfortunately, he lost his wife within the past few years. I think they were utterly devoted to one another.
Jacques Pepin is 86 so he must have been doing something right. He had a very good TV show. PBS used to have quite a few of them a while back. Yan can Cook and that Louisiana guy who poured wine into everything he cooked. Even that bald church minster guy from Seattle, who turned out was gay and was getting it on with his young assistants.
Floyd on Fish from England (BBC) was a favorite. He was hilarious, and drank vino openly during his show.
Their old Kenmore sewing machines are still running like new with just a bit of lubricant.
I know, I service them along with the fancy new computers that sew.
The old metal machines will still be around long after the plastic fancy things are gone.
I think Justin Wilson was the name of the Cajun guy. Galloping Gourmet was fun, too. Loved PBS cooking shows on rainy Saturdays 😋
.
One thing I really like about Pepin is that even though he was trained to the highest French cuisine, worked in fine restaurants and even for heads of state, most of his books and programs are geared toward the “average” home cook.
I wish you were near me. I have two of the old workhorse ‘metal ones’ that probably need a check-up. It’s hard to find sewing machine repair guys now - there used to be one in or very near every neighborhood.
(Same goes for vacuum cleaner repair. I had a little one that lasted me about 30 years, with one repair.)
“I think Justin Wilson was the name of the Cajun guy.”
That’s him. He was hilarious and really hammed up the Cajun angle.
For the past decade or so, business classes in college teach your goal is to only work at a company a few years. Making as much as possible. Then on to next conquest.
Running companies into ground is the work of educated “experts”.
