Turkey's Erdogan warns Greece to demilitarize Aegean islands

urkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Thursday warned Greece to demilitarize islands in the Aegean Sea, saying he was “not joking” and posting tweets in Greek and English, in a marked harshening of rhetoric against Turkey’s neighbor and historic regional rival.

Turkey says Greece has been building a military presence in violation of treaties that guarantee the unarmed status of the Aegean islands. It argues the islands were ceded to Greece on the condition they remained demilitarized.

Athens counters that the islands, which have been garrisoned for decades and lie within close striking distance of a large Turkish landing fleet, can't be left undefended.

“We invite Greece to stop arming the islands that have non-military status and to act in accordance with international agreements,“ Erdogan said on the final day of military exercises taking place near Izmir, on Turkey’s Aegean coast. “I’m not joking, I’m speaking seriously. This nation is determined.”

I'm surprised SFGate does not know Turkey is no more, but it is to be called Türkiye now.

Really? I am still having trouble calling a certain dish "Chicken Kyiv", or complimenting pet owners on their Myanmarese cats.

WW III is coming, no matter what anyone can do. It was pre-ordained from the retreat from Kabul. Is that what Brandon intended to happen? Or was he just a coward and a moron?

Go Galt. Move to the country and dig a fall-out shelter. Grow food, fence your perimeter, buy lots of ammo.

On the bright side, the Dems have found a way to prevail in the mid-terms. Armageddon makes elections moot.

Mr. Erdogan is the problem, not Turkey. He is slowly running the place into the ground and is trying to use anything and everything to retain power. Now he turns back to using ancient enmity towards Greece.

How much of our money is going to be confiscated and put into the aid package?

“...meanwhile in Cyprus and Kurdistan...”

You forgot Armenia.
A lot of Turks still feel there’s unfinished business with Armenia/Azerbaijan, as Armenia wasn’t *completely* wiped out in that conflict. Russia (belatedly) put a stop to it.

I always order Beijing Duck while wearing my Chennai shorts because the busy pattern hides the duck sauce stains.

[saying he was “not joking”]

So, he didn’t really mean it when he said:

“Take my wife. Please.”?

[WW III is coming, no matter what anyone can do.]

Yes. That is, more than likely, an inescapable conclusion. Hope we’re wrong but I don’t think we are.

I’ll call it World War IV.

If the EMP hasn’t fried everything, we can quibble about it on what few functioning communication devices are left surviving.

I look forward to quibbling on a scratchy short-wave radio that I find in the basement of a burnt-out house, after killing the occupant for a piece of cheese (I hate cheese). The steel I-beams holding up the floor above would act like a steel cage to save it from the EMP, I suppose. I hold my nose and swallow the cheese, then look for ways to dismember the vanquished occupant for roasting.

May be the only hope (”By Dawn’s Early Light” - if can believe Rebecca as a SAC B-52 copilot).

Look for crackers. You just have to share with the occupant.

I can not officially endorse any type of Soylent Green mind you.

Now a rat burger 🍔.....
