Masks and social distancing are little more than useless ‘virtue signaling’.
Masks and social distancing were imposed (prior to the vaccines) in an attempt by politicians to show they were ‘doing something’. The politicians can’t admit they were wrong because, well, politicians just simply admit to being wrong.
Your experience sounds typical.
The mask propaganda was nirvana for germaphobes. It fed their phobia, and enhanced their desperate, weak egos. It's no wonder they refuse to give up their support system.

I have three doctors appointments coming up next month and all are requiring the damned masks. Being the Smart Aleck I am, I’m thinking about buying some MOPP gear to wear to the appointments, just to make a statement.
Anyone know where I can get some quick and cheap?
This is reality and a clear indication that many people would rather fool themselves (never a good idea) than to accept that they have been lied to by politicians, by even-more-powerful unelected bureaucrats and by "medical experts" who practace political science rather than medical science for over two long years.
In addition to not filtering out viruses, the masks interfere with breathing and normal human communication. Tired of having to sneak a pull-down to get some oxygen. Tired of not understanding clerks speaking in muffled tones.
Research has definitively proved paper bags ineffective. Compromise needs to based in real science. Intact plastic bags, duct taped around the neck have been proven most effective.

Amazing how many people in my part of the world still voluntarily wear the filthy things. Asians (lots in my nabe) wear them outside and in. Virtue signalling whites generally wear them on their wrists but put them on inside. Black women still seem to have a mask fetish as well.
In the end the joke’s going to be on you.
