Senate negotiators reach framework deal on bipartisan gun package

WASHINGTON — Key senators announced a framework agreement on new gun legislation Sunday, marking a breakthrough on a collection of measures to combat gun violence, including “red flag” laws and enhanced background checks on buyers.

The chief negotiators of the deal are Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., an outspoken proponent of gun safety laws, and Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a firm Second Amendment advocate who has promised the new measures won’t impact the gun rights of law-abiding Americans. The final bill hasn’t been written yet, sources familiar with the negotiations said.

“Today, we are announcing a commonsense, bipartisan proposal to protect America’s children, keep our schools safe, and reduce the threat of violence across our country,” Murphy, Cornyn and other senators involved in the talks said in a joint statement. “Families are scared, and it is our duty to come together and get something done that will help restore their sense of safety and security in their communities.”

Unlike the Democratic-authored series of gun bills that passed the House last week, the Senate deal has a good chance of becoming law because it is expected to have support from key Republicans, who wield effective veto power over gun legislation in the Senate due to the 60-vote filibuster rule.

A centerpiece of the Senate deal is substantial resources for states to implement “red flag” laws, which allow individuals like police or family members to petition courts to keep firearms away from people deemed a risk to themselves or others.

No doubt there is plenty of trash in this bill that has nothing to do with guns.

None of it will be good for us.

That is the meaning of "bipartisan support".

"Haven’t really seen them do any more than the NRA either."

"Red Flag" laws will draw the attention of more than just the usual 2A folks, as it flys in the face of Due Process.

Oh please. I may be biased since I'm from Texas, but Cornyn is one of the top Senators I'd love to get rid of. Too many people don't recognize him for being the liberal douche he is. At least everyone (except their own States) recognizes McCain and Romney and so on.

And he's right - these measures won't affect "law-abiding gun owners" because there won't be any law-abiding gun owners left after all these laws are in place!

Excellent way to put it. My scumbag lame duck, Blunt is screwing us on the way out.

It has already “sunk in” for a lot of us.

The GOP, Inc. party cannot be trusted to do the right thing.

I’ve already decided what must happen but I’m not sure others have yet...

It’s ignoramuses like you who are destroying this country.

You think you’re a conservative, but you believe our constitution needs tweaking because modern liberals do not enforce laws on the books.

...that red flag law will get struck down.

Heck, that extra scrutiny for 18-21 year-olds will also be struck down. Federal courts and SCOTUS have already ruled on different cases and have made it clear EIGHTEEN is an adult by all intents and purposes; therefore, those who attain the age of 18 have the same rights as those who are 21, 31, or 81!

Just as it should be! The only difference which I have seen is where medical/health is involved (like smoking which can cause worse, longer-term issues when started at a younger age, etc.).

Honestly, this is nothing more than another government hand-out to the States - PERIOD! We are going to give you money to do the things we WANT you to do, but do not have the Constitutional authority to MAKE you do! F-EM!

DING! DING! DING!
We have a winner!

This is worth repeating:

I think you are confusing regulation of guns and regulation of minors. Did our Founders believe that we needed federal laws to deprive minors from purchasing firearms?

When I was a kid I bought 22 ammunition from a corner grocery store. Today in Kalifornia I have to pass a background check to buy ammo. We live today in an era of extremely low expectations. This will not end well.

I have not voted for Cornyn in the general election since he voted to bail out companies with poor financial sense and large union pensions, with MY TAXPAYER DOLLARS!

I vote AGAINST him in every primary...when someone runs against him...ANYONE would be better than that idiot!

The answer to all this is to identify as law enforcement. Tell them that you are “trans-LEO.”

This sounds like something that the House will shoot down in a nanosecond.
