DETROIT -- Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles and dozens of other women who say they were sexually assaulted by Larry Nassar are seeking more than $1 billion from the FBI for failing to stop the convicted sports doctor when the agency first received allegations against him, lawyers said Wednesday.
There is no dispute that FBI agents in 2015 knew that Nassar was accused of assaulting gymnasts, but they failed to act, leaving him free to continue to target young women and girls for more than a year.
"It is time for the FBI to be held accountable," said Maggie Nichols, a national champion gymnast at Oklahoma from 2017 to 2019.
Under federal law, a government agency has six months to respond to the tort claims filed Wednesday. Lawsuits could follow, depending on the FBI's response.
The approximately 90 claimants include Biles, Aly Raisman and McKayla Maroney, all Olympic gold medalists, according to Manly, Stewart & Finaldi, a California law firm.
"If the FBI had simply done its job, Nassar would have been stopped before he ever had the chance to abuse hundreds of girls, including me," said former University of Michigan gymnast Samantha Roy.
Indianapolis-based USA Gymnastics told local FBI agents in 2015 that three gymnasts said they were assaulted by Nassar, a team doctor. But the FBI did not open a formal investigation or inform federal or state authorities in Michigan, according to the Justice Department's inspector general, an internal watchdog.
Los Angeles FBI agents in 2016 began a sexual tourism investigation against Nassar and interviewed several survivors but also didn't alert Michigan authorities, the inspector general said.

Wray still has his job.

I want to see the FBI pay for its disgusting ways.
Unless there are criminal convictions of FBI agents, nothing will change, and the settlements will just be added to the federal debt.

Good luck. The FBI has *never* been held accountable. The agents responsible were already cleared by the DPJ of wrongdoing and won’t face charges. The rot continues and will continue.
And the families of the Uvalde Elementary School operation, too.
And the Vegas shooting.
And MSD High School shooting.
DPJ -> DOJ
I think we pay for this mess sad to say.
Qualified immunity.
Like the way you can gun down an unarmed peaceful woman in the capital without consequences.
They should demand that FBI top brass be fired.
Start at the top and keep going down the org chart until $1 billion in FBI salary has been fulfilled.
THEY are not held accountable WE the taxpayers are held accountable the bastards that did nothing for these girls will not be affected in any way WE PAY THE BILL!!!
But I’m sure he was “on their radar scope” and that’s as much as one could hope for.
Simone Biles and her teammates won't get a nickel.
“I hope they win and then every other victim of FBI’s incompetence”
Without judging the individual cases, the money that is “paid by the FBI” is actually paid by us (taxpayers).
The reason why they didn’t roll this guy up is there was nothing in it for them...financially or politically. If they gave Stroke/Strock/Smirk a big check something might have happened.
Additionally, they are still sitting on Hunter’s laptop & how years has that been?
I want to see the FBI tried, convicted, and sentenced for giving aid and comfort to the enemies of the United States.
Protecting women against sexual predators isn’t in their charter. (See: Bill Clinton, Jeffrey Epstein.) Instead, protecting communists and hunting down conservatives is their charter. And stealing gold, whether from civil war treasure hunters or from the Branch Davidians.
Different principle. Not qualified immunity, rather sovereign immunity. I don’t know much about federal sovereign immunity. If this were a state action action against a state agency, what I’ve learned about some states’ sovereign immunity is that in some states such a lawsuit could get past the pleading stage. If this were a California state action, sovereign immunity (the Tort Claims Act) would kill it dead as a doornail
Or stand around doing nothing while a crazed murderer kills kids in a school.
