Russia's invasion of Ukraine is a major reason that US drivers are paying record prices for gasoline. But it's not the only cause of the spike.
Numerous factors are pushing prices up, with regular gasoline hitting a record $4.87 a gallon Monday according to AAA's survey — up 25 cents a gallon in just the last week.
Gas prices were already expected to breach the $4 a gallon mark for the first time since 2008, with or without shots fired in Eastern Europe or economic sanctions imposed on Russia. But now the national average is expected to hit $5 a gallon within the next two weeks, said Tom Kloza, global head of energy analysis for the OPIS, which tracks gas prices for AAA.
"I think we reach $5 somewhere between this weekend and Juneteenth/Father's Day weekend," he said. It was back in March that prices first broke the record of $4.11 a gallon, which had stood since 2008. That now seems like the good old days: The national average has been rising steadily for the past month, setting 27 records in the last 28 days.
More than one out of every five gas stations nationwide is now charging more than $5 a gallon for regular, and just more than half are charging $4.75.

I’m in N. Pekin. I feel your pain.
Take a solar panel and pass the rest back.
The obvious solution would be to increase domestic petroleum production and limit offshore petroleum sales. I’ll hold my breath until Brandon decides to do that. /s
Even the first sentences from CNN is a big lie. Gasoline prices had already spiked by the time Russia stormed the Donbas. WH is playing word games trying to roll the start point back to 2014 when Russia Seized Crimea.
Nope, your price at the pump is Wholey Joe.
You make too much sense.
Biden said this is proof that his climate change policies are working.
Jan 21, 2021’s Bidet’s shutdown of public land drilling, offshore drilling, all fracking, Keystone and 2 other pipelines etc, were the reason; we didn’t need any dirty Rooskie oil.
CNN just had to get in “Juneteenth.”
And this has nothing to do with the Biden clown show, either.
People forget that large swaths of the U.S. energy sector were facing insolvency back in 2020 when the COVID fiasco resulted in the collapse of petroleum prices. It even reached the point where the President of the United States was reduced to groveling at the feet of Saudi Arabia and Russia to beg them to CUT oil production and stop the free-fall of oil prices.
Since that time, leaders in every U.S. industry have had to include a scenario in their strategic planning that they probably never remotely considered before: that U.S. government officials could shut down businesses and impose heavy restrictions on people’s lives indefinitely, and without any due process.
As I’ve said many times before … We are only just beginning to see the long-term ramifications of that outrageous government response to COVID.
You know they are going to fix this? They are going to change the pricing of gas from gallons to liters, call the initial move a steep decrease in price and charge $1.35 a liter.
Biden will be hailed as a courageous hero for taking on the cartels and the lemmings will love him for it.
Prices will go down the second a republican takes office. Democrap love their Big Oil, who always has record profits when a democrap is in office.
I just read an article that we are producing more oil today, approx. 11 million barrels per day, than we were in 2019 which was a record setting year. So which is it?
With Exxon's stated profits, sounds to me like it's the oil companies who are gouging the public with these high costs.
Of course. It's how a LOT of very corrupt people (some of them otherwise, very low level players) get themselves into a position to stuff their pockets, while shafting the whole nation.
At the same, time they get on their soap box and lecture all of us about the ‘climate’.
