Road Trip: Camp Lejeune, North Carolina

NCcamplejeune1

Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is a 246-square-mile United States military training facility in Jacksonville, North Carolina. Its 14 miles of beaches make the base a major area for amphibious assault training, and its location between two deep-water ports (Wilmington and Morehead City) allows for fast deployments.

The main base is supplemented by six satellite facilities: Marine Corps Air Station New River, Camp Geiger, Stone Bay, Courthouse Bay, Camp Johnson, and the Greater Sandy Run Training Area. The Marine Corps port facility is in Beaufort, at the southern tip of Radio Island (between the NC State Port in Morehead City, and the marine science laboratories on Pivers Island in Beaufort). It is military property but is occupied only during military port operations.

Camp Lejeune encompasses 156,000 acres, with 11 miles of beach capable of supporting amphibious operations, 32 gun positions, 48 tactical landing zones, three state-of-the-art training facilities for Military Operations in Urban Terrain and 80 live fire ranges to include the Greater Sandy Run Training Area. Military forces from around the world come to Camp Lejeune on a regular basis for bilateral exercises.

NCcamplejeune5

Weapons Training Battalion, Marine Corps Base, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina was initially activated on 1 January 1943 as the Rifle Range Detachment, Training Center, Camp Lejeune, New River, North Carolina for the purpose of providing marksmanship training to Marines preparing for combat duty during World War II. Today, marksmanship training is undergoing many significant changes that will empower the Marine Corps to successfully meet any challenge across the globe.

The II Marine Expeditionary Force (II MEF) is a Marine Air-Ground Task Force consisting of ground, air and logistics forces capable of projecting offensive combat power ashore while sustaining itself in combat without external assistance for a period of 60 days. The II Marine Expeditionary Force is commanded by a lieutenant general, who serves under U.S. Marine Corps Forces Command, providing Marine fighting formations and units to European Command, Central Command and Southern Command.

Jesus Is Here
Read: Matthew 28:16–20

[Teach] them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. Matthew 28:20

My elderly great aunt lay on her sickbed with a smile on her face. Her gray hair was pushed back from her face and wrinkles covered her cheeks. She didn’t speak much, but I still recall the few words she said when my father, mother, and I visited her. She whispered, “I don’t get lonely. Jesus is here with me.”

As a single woman at the time, I marveled at my aunt’s proclamation. Her husband had died several years earlier, and her children lived far away. Nearing her ninetieth year of life, she was alone, in her bed, barely able to move. Yet she was able to say she wasn’t lonely.

My aunt took Jesus’ words to the disciples literally, as we all should: “Surely I am with you always” (Matthew 28:20). She knew that Christ’s Spirit was with her, as He promised when He instructed the disciples to go out into the world and share His message with others (v. 19). Jesus said the Holy Spirit would “be with” the disciples and us (John 14:16–17).

I’m certain my aunt experienced the reality of that promise. The Spirit was within her as she lay on her bed. And the Spirit used her to share His truth with me—a young niece who needed to hear those words and take them to heart.Katara Patton

How are you encouraged by the reality that Jesus is with you today? How have you experienced the comfort of the Holy Spirit?

Thank You, Jesus, for sending Your Spirit as my comfort and companion. Remind me of Your presence throughout this day.

Bible in a year: 2 Chronicles 28–29; John 17

Howdy, Kathy.

I hoped y’all might get some rain earlier today. The skies looked promising for a while but nope. Drat.
I read that your temps have finally backed off and that must be a relief.

Howdy, luvie.

I saw on the evening news that it was incredibly hot there today. UGH! I hope this hot spell isn’t going to last long. That kind of heat is dangerous. I hope the kitties got through the day ok.

Hey there, radu!

It was 105 BUT with the low humidity it “felt like” 98. Big consolation. The kitties are fine. They had plenty of cool water and had their hidey holes to rest in. Tomorrow the high is supposed to be 107. Only one day under 100 in the next 10 days. Just kill me now. LOL!

I hope it’s nicer there. Enjoy it and think of us here. I hope you had some rain if it’s needed. Have I told you how much I detest summer? 🤣

The low humidity is the savior. Every little bit helps when it’s that hot! LOL But dang, that’s a long hot spell ahead for y’all. :-(

Pretty warm here today but not like last week, thank goodness. Some heavy showers came through and cooled things off a little but it was still steamy.
There’s another line of rain coming through the state now that will be here sometime after midnight. And more rain late tomorrow. That’s good because the guy who owns the field across the road just planted over the weekend.

Sounds like the rain is pretty steady, which is a good thing with all the crops needing to grow. What do you suppose the farmer across the road will plant? Sure hope it’s not cotton.

To: luvie

Not exactly steady. Different systems will come through. We have the one today and the next one is over KS now. Today we had scattered showers and tomorrow will be about the same. A lot of folks didn’t get a drop today and we were lucky to get the shower we did.

No, it won’t be cotton across the road. I’d talked to the guy earlier this year and he hadn’t decided on corn or soybeans at the time. He has corn in the other fields he owns so I suppose he put corn across the road. He said he hates cotton and will never plant it. Whew!

Oh, thank goodness for that good news. If cotton didn’t feel so good in the summer, I’d say ban it. LOL!

Howdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))

Were you and Gizmo lucky enough to have fewer folks at the lake yesterday? It’s more fun for y’all when there isn’t a throng.
