Rep. Liz Cheney of Wyoming in a new interview took aim at her fellow Republicans who she says have pledged loyalty to former President Donald Trump rather than their oath of office.
"We have too many people now, in the Republican Party, who are not taking their responsibility seriously, and who have pledged their allegiance and loyalty to Donald Trump," the Republican lawmaker told CBS' Robert Costa in a clip of their interview that will air in full on Sunday.
"It is fundamentally antithetical, it is contrary to everything conservatives believe to embrace a personality cult," Cheney continued. "And yet, that is what so many in my party are doing today."
Costa asked Cheney whether she believes the GOP is a personality cult, to which she responded that "large segments" have become so.
"There is absolutely a cult of personality around Donald Trump," she added.
The congresswoman's comments come as she's gearing up for an intense political battle to hold on to her seat in Wyoming against Trump-backed opponent Harriet Hageman, a lawyer and former Republican National Committee member. Cheney officially filed for reelection last Thursday although she was already widely expected to re-run.
Trump, who's targeted Cheney over her vote to impeach him for his role in the January 6 Capitol riot, campaigned for Hageman at a rally last Saturday in Casper, Wyoming. Thousands of his supporters filled the indoor auditorium and cheered as Trump took the stage and attacked Cheney.
The Wyoming Republican primary takes place on August 16.

She from the “Cult of No Personality”
Translation - He's more popular than me. Send for a Waaahmbulance.
Either I have a total misunderstanding of MAGA or Liz does. I suspect it’s Liz who’s badly mistaken.
If Liz is right, then we who are MAGA would accept each and every position he’s taken on each and every issue without question.
My understanding of the relationship between Trump and the MAGA movement is that he is an avatar that allows us to express our utter disgust with the corruption and rot in government and politics today. And that while we trusted him as the person to lead the populist movement to get the country back on the right track, we can acknowledge when he’s wrong about something, have no fear in disagreeing with him about that, while simultaneously still saying that he would’ve been trying to accomplish in general. Therefore, not even close to a cult of personality.
To wit:
1) Trump has shown that he’s got no issue with “gay marriage.” I don’t think there are any more than a few FReepers who share that view.
2) Trump depended heavily upon the advice of his son-in-law and daughter on a whole host of issues. I can’t think of the number of times that I read threads on FR where most of us were pulling the hair out of our heads (”What are you doing!! You need to dump Javanka!!!”) [NB:in fairness, Jared did a heck of a job with the Abraham Accords]
3) Wuhan Flu Vaccine: By the time he left office, how many of us were on board with him on the vaccines that were developed under “Warp Speed”? The impression I’ve gotten is that 90% of the MAGA movement would dump Trump if he ever came out in favor of the vaccine mandates that the imposter imposed (but i could be wrong there)
4) I think that many of us have shaken our heads with some of the endorsements he gave over the years. And haven’t hesitated to express that bewilderment (he even endorsed Willard...much less the most recent controversy, Oz)
There have been other issues over the years. But for that, we all think that he was the right man for the job, did an amazing job in his first term, and may well do a good job for a third term (since his second term was stolen from him).
By those four issues alone, this is not a cult of personality.
Liz, on the other hand, demands a cult following the WEF-led Uniparty. We must not question. Disagreement = heresy that must be persecuted and destroyed.
Projection much, Liz?
Ah, you got it too. See my above reply.
She’s starting to sound like Hillary, and look like her too.
Now do the cult around Barack Hussein O’Muslim, mmm, mmm, mmm.
Shut up globalist bya*ch
Does she ever criticize Democrats?
These times call for someone like Trump.
The Bush Rule: “Attacking your base is not a winning strategy”
Hey Liz, stick it where the sun don’t shine!
Liz, you’re not that cool and no, you can’t sit at my lunch table.
What a pathetic person.
She would see this entire country totally destroyed if it meant something bad for Donald Trump.
Lizzie Borden who is so desperate to take the ax to trumps presidency.
Yup!
Ironically, she’s the one most obsessed with him. She just can’t stop talking about him - literally the reason she’s in the political turmoil she is now.
Ditto! I did not vote for Trump in 2016. But I liked Trumps policies.
Trump was not always a friend of conservatives. He was a Democrat who donated to Hillary Clinton and Kamala’s AG campaign. But when he was elected POTUS, he danced with who brung him. I never forgot that.
2024 is a political lifetime away. Trump should pívot and make this about the future and the people instead of 2020.
You’ve got about 6 more months in office. Then your political career is over forever. Kinzinger’s too. Lots of other RINOs will be joining you in the ranks of the unemployed. It can’t happen soon enough.
