Like paying tax is voluntary.
Most went into indentured service to get out of debtors prison (often leading to death).

My reparations would be an office at the airport giving one way tickets to anyone’s “homeland” who feels their lineage was hampered by being born here. Oh, an agreement to never return.

The veterans of the Union Army, their surviving widows and children were paid pensions for their service or death during the war.
As late as 2020, there was one surviving son of a Union Civil War veteran still drawing a monthly check from the Treasury of the United States because of his father’s service.
