Navy desertions have more than doubled amid suicide concerns, as sailors feel trapped by contracts

The number of sailors who deserted the Navy more than doubled from 2019 to 2021, while desertions in other military branches dropped or stayed flat, pointing to a potential Navy-wide mental health crisis amid a spate of recent suicides, according to experts and federal statistics obtained by NBC News.

Among a fleet of more than 342,000 active sailors, there were 157 new Navy deserters in 2021, compared with 63 in 2019 and 98 in 2020, Navy data shows. The total number of deserters who were still at large in 2021 grew to 166 from 119 in 2019. Most of them were 25 and younger.

“That’s staggering,” said Benjamin Gold, a defense attorney for U.S. service members.

Sorry if this news was posted previously...yes, I did search.

Anyway, I can't blame servicemembers for despairing under the "leadership" of the groper-in-chief. But desertion is not the way to go.

If a transsexual sailor is accommodated fully but detects a slight insincerity that sailor cannot be expected to be subject to the demeaning and literally violent red tape of leaving in an official (read slavery) fashion.

“Notice I’m gone? get the picture?”

Sounds like all they have to do is say they’re LGBTWXYZ and are feeling offended or oppressed or something and they’ll get transferred to somewhere else.

Move to Canada like they did in the 60’s. Canada would probably return them. Desert en masse and ask for political asylum. The US would take notice. So would the Chicoms.

We can argue todays men are wusses compared to before but since B.J. the democrats seem to treat he military like it’s whipping boy. The military should be left alone to run it’s own affairs. You look at their mission. Who else does what they do?

Since Jimmah Carter, actually. I was there.

I went in at the beginning of the Reagan administration and retired after the end of the Clinton Regime.

I can understand their despair.

Not well informed about current conditions at sea. I’m speculating that reduced manning and eliminating the maintenance and repair of the ship and her systems leads to many long hours of standing watch. Doing only that for many long hours must be very boring. Being merely a systems operator wouldn’t be very satisfying and might lead to low morale.

Some of these deserters may be having emotional or mental problems. Others may have problems with a firm commitment to anything or to anybody other than themselves. The self discipline of freely taken committments are the first stepping stones to being an adult.

You don’t have to ‘like’ every single aspect of your job. You probably won’t. Just accept this duty as your job for the time being. People don’t ‘like’ paying their utility bill, but they’ll do it.

There are always desertions. It was so bad on my ship they relieved our captain of his command.

I had to fly to Spain to catch up with my ship. The man who escorted me to it, went AWOL as soon as we got to the gangway.

Navy-wide mental health crisis amid a spate of recent suicides
/\

What did they expect

after making service a sex change freebie to mentally unstable , uh, individuals ?

Even straight sailors who had to walk on eggshells around them or be called up on the carpet ?

Or all the conflicts of relationships when they put men and women on the same ship ?

Recipes for disaster

and the progs knew dsmn well all that would rot moral from inside out.

If they want to desert, it shouldn’t be that hard. Take a liberty while in Mexico and then cross over the non-protected border into the U.S. Even if stopped, you can apparently disappear and nobody will look for you, much less find you. Also be sure to ask for the welfare office. Plenty of “sanctuary cities” in Cali to choose from.

That just reminded me of one of when many years ago I requested and got my deceased father's full navy records. After waiting a few months got a stack of paper about an inch thick. A lot of very cool/interesting things in it.

After enlisting, he was sent to a naval training center from his home town, a bus ride of 8 hours. He was put in charge of the 2 other guys and was given 3 dollars, one dollar per man (I guess for snacks and stuff for the bus trip). "Way to go dad! They recognized you as having leadership potential over those other guys..." :) Another one was what he listed as hobbies on his enlistment form. If your dad was in the military and deceased, I highly recommend doing this.

My dad was the “Leading Chief” in an A-6 Intruder Squadron

in the last years of his Navy career in the early 1970s during two long WESTPAC cruises on Yankee Station off the coast of North Viet Nam. He and the other Chiefs took care of their sailors.

He did what was best for each sailor and helped those who wanted to change jobs to do so.

Met several of his former squadron mates at a reunion three years ago on the USS Midway in San Diego. I was amazed at the number of his fellow Chiefs and sailors who told my mom and me how much respect they had for him. Even heard about a few times when he would chew out a few junior officers for some stupid stuff they did. One on them went to the CO to tell about. The CO told the junior officer that if Chief “Rattlesnake” chewed him out, there was a reason and he should listen.

His squadron didn’t have desertion or suicides because they knew their superiors cared about their needs and futures.
