Kharkiv's mayor tells the BBC that Ukrainian forces have pushed Russian troops "far out" from Ukraine's second city.

"Now it is calm and people are gradually coming back to the city," Mayor Ihor Terekhov says

The comments came after a respected military think tank said Ukraine has "likely won the battle" for Kharkiv

I have to confess that I’m turning my focus in this thing on Snake Island.

Below is a horribly biased report, but contains interesting info:

The russians are still vulnerable there. But if they are able to get solid defensive control over the area around it, it effectively becomes a massive “aircraft carrier” and “troop transport” right off the coast.

I believe their primary goal right now is to get the long range air defenses in as step one. Then it is game over.

The advances to the north and east of Kharkiv met little to no resistance. So a “think tank” believes the battle has been won. So one question - does this advance threaten the areas of the stated objective and specifically the right flank of the Lzyum salient or operations against dug in positions in Severodonetsk? Let’s see if any advances past Vesele or Kozacha Lopan (North and east of Kharkiv) come to pass.

The childishness and frankly lunacy of people who post here mocking any report of a Ukrainian victory - makes me wonder if they are teenagers acting out. But no they are in their 60’s and 70’s acting like wise mouth kids.

Obviously Russia didn’t achieve its initial objectives. But two year olds on here just post bratty comments rather than absorb and analyze reports.

Perhaps most troubling is that the libertarian isolationists are now angry that Russia is losing and they are demanding we stop helping Ukraine because they want Russia to win come hell or high water.

And by misunderstanding the world situation so completely, they’ve let Biden off the hook for his worst part in this - the weakness which invited the Russian invasion.

The first report I heard was that Russia had abandoned Snake Island prior to the attack by Ukraine.

I thought it was the Ukrainians there that are now out of artillery range. So they are “globalists”? That they were getting hammered by Russian artillery was “good” because of the “globalists”?

Your ethical sense is unfathomable.

I know this is difficult for some, but who are the Globalists supporting in this war?

It does have a bearing on the Izyum salient. Since the Ukrainians have occupied the west bank of the Donets up to the border, it puts what used to be the main supply route from the nearest Russian railhead in artillery range. That means the Russians now have a serious constraint in their supply situation, and that affects the main concentration of Russian forces in Ukraine.

Yeah, they also said the Russians remorselessly slaughtered the Ukrainian defenders, but it turned out the Ukrainians had simply been captured.

The fog of war thingee should prevent all of us from coming up with “solid” opinions on any of this. We only know what we are being told, and all sources have been demonstrated to be wrong on one thing or another.

This is looking like the Winter War where the Finns kicked the incompetent Soviets’ @$$es. The risk of Russians defeat in Ukraine is that it means the end of the reign for Putin. So what is next for Russia?

The Ukrainians, up to a point apparently.
They have tried to “meter” aid to Ukraine from the beginning, nixing say the Polish tank reinforcement for over a month. “Heavy Weapons” you know. Too, too escalating.

They seem to think they can have only so much war, and no more.

Take your lead from the Poles. They have always had the moral high ground here. They are anti-globalists, being in constant hot water with the lords of the EU. At the same time they knew what was up with the Russians since forever.

The “globalists” were content to play footsie with the Russians. Nordstream II was their baby. But they were too clever for their own good, and their partner Putin did not behave himself.

Now they have to deal with their rabid pet.

Though I agree with your broad point, I don’t really understand “anti-american” in many contexts used today.

My position is that I don’t take a side here. Think of me as a
British reporter that reports on the facts of Germany surrounding the forces at Dunkirk, and touching on why they are doing it and how it could play out. I’m not saying I’m rooting for Germany. I’m saying this may be why they are doing it and what they have to gain.
