Russia warns of ‘military’ retaliation measures over Finland Nato application

Russia has warned that it will have to take “military-technical” steps in response to Finland’s application to join Nato.

The foreign ministry accused the military alliance of seeking to create “another flank for the military threat to our country”.

“Helsinki should be aware of its responsibility and the consequences of such a move,” the ministry added.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “The expansion of Nato and the approach of the alliance to our borders does not make the world and our continent more stable and secure”.

When asked whether Finland’s accession to the military alliance would be considered a threat toward Russia, Peskov answered: “Definitely”.

Earlier on Thursday, Finnish leaders said they were in favour of joining Nato and a formal decision would be made this weekend.

Finland, which shares an 810 mile border and a difficult past with Russia, has gradually stepped up its cooperation with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization as a partner since Russia annexed Crimea in 2014.

Exactly, and once Finland does join NATO, which is their right, the Russians aren’t going to do jack sh*t about it.

OK. The Russians were welcomed into Finland with boquets.

Suggesting the Russians were able to accomplish anything in WWII without the help of America is silly. And even then, they could barely manage until we opened the other two fronts.

Good try.

I think we did just as badly in Iraq and Afghanistan. Kind of pathetic to hear fellow Americans floating over the possibility of another pointless war we won’t win. Meanwhile we are being invaded on the southern border. The reality is we can’t beat Russia or China . We would all lose. Life is hard enough let’s just stop the pro nazi Ukraine propaganda.

Why else would you join NATO?

Oh yeah...to make it easier to kill Russians and have their bodies be left stacked in the back of a Uhaul box truck.

Just tell the parents to go into the back of the truck and pick out the parts that were their children.

Nato is worthless , just a vehicle to start Third World War.

We are treating a massively armed world power as if they were some tinpot dictatorship.

In terms of conventional forces, and relative to all of NATO, they pretty much are. Capable of lots of bluster, and ruling their own lads with an iron fist, but relatively impotent beyond that given what is happening in Ukraine. Who would want to destroy both the USA and Putin? The Soros funded left is who.

And how exactly are both Russia and the U.S. going to be "destroyed" in your scenario?

It is worth mentioning that the Russians destroyed most of the German divisions and chased them out of USSR before the second front was opened.
It has nothing to do with the fact that Finland indeed lost two wars.
You probably missed all these facts due to how poor your education is.

2 questions:

1) Why is there still a nato?
2) Why is the United States still honoring a treaty that the other participants refuse to live up to?

“You are aware of the “boy crying wolf” story, right?”

They are what they are and there’s not much flexibility to pretend to be something else...like reasonable. If you’re doing something and it fails, then do it again, but harder, louder and with more force. If Russia fails militarily than they are faced with a humiliating retreat or using nuclear weapons. Would they do that? I for one don’t want to find out. I wish Finland and Sweeden had moved quickly and quietly and presented an accomplished fact. They didn’t because they too were posturing, not wanting to do it and hoping the threat would force Russia to back off. It was silly but it is going to take some scary admissions that the security regime has changed, and we can’t go back to the way things were when Trump could issue a mean Tweet and the Russians would back off. Biden’s inability to talk or walk up stairs has prompted the Russians to take this one last chance to establish new borders and a new security regime.

Russia thinks NATO is like their fifteen Republic countries, totally owned by the US. They want to totally own the former republics of the Soviet Union. Those countries would rather die than be back under the Russian thumb. When this is over and probably right now, all of those countries are planning to go nuclear because had Ukraine kept those nukes they inherited none of this would be happening now.

And as usual with this sort of comment, the Finns, Swedes, Poles, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, etc and etc dont seem to count.

This is manichaean thinking, where all these events seem to be explained as a simplistic battle between evil masterminds. News from the real world - there are vastly more players, interests, and machinations going on than fit in such a silly model.

And even the players assumed to be involved are collective entities with little unity, very few common interests, and vastly less genius available.

The Russian Federation has the power to destroy the United States several times over. You know this, yet you and your com-padres are on every thread here trying to push the United States into an insane war. It makes me wonder who is paying you and the other supposedly pro-Ukrainian thugs populating these threads. I know it isn’t MAGA. I don’t care what dates are in your FR profiles, you impress me as activated bot accounts that are here for malicious reasons, spreading propaganda of the most sordid and evil sort. Jim Robinson should zot every last one of you.

“Russia actually won two wars against Finland in the last century. The second time they begged to allow them to exist as a nation and were only allowed on conditions of neutrality.”

Russia is a failed nation with immense nuclear power. They could be the Wheat Capital and Energy supplier to Europe, but they are hell bent on returning their old Russian ways.

They see NATO expansion and have chosen war over peace to preserve their old ways.

Russia attacks Finland in 1939. Finland cedes 9% of its territory to Russia.

Fast forward: Russia attacks and conquers Crimea. Russia attacks Ukraine.

Finland, reading the present and the past, applies for NATO membership. Russia makes military threats.

Russian trolls on FR: Russia is the offended party.

Sigh...

It’s like thought and argument without reason, a knee jerk, conditioned response learned in a world that no longer exists. It seems like a defense mechanism of sorts, a resort to the familiar, an unwillingness to face the realities at hand.

I don’t think the Finns want that back now - it’s filled with Muscowy people and this will be a future anschluss cause.
