Louisiana lawmakers 'cannot wait on the Supreme Court' and have advanced a bill that would not only abolish abortion but classify it as homicide.
The move on Wednesday came two days after a leaked draft ruling showed the US Supreme Court poised to overturn the 1973 landmark Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide.
Louisiana state Representative Danny McCormick, a Republican who introduced the 'Abolition of Abortion Act' legislation in March, said the impending ruling from the nation's high court should not delay the state's efforts to ban abortion access.
'We cannot wait on the Supreme Court,' McCormick said in a hearing on Wednesday.
The legislation, approved in a 7-2 committee vote, now moves to the state's full House of Representatives for consideration.
The court's final ruling is expected in June, and if passed, it would grant constitutional rights to 'all unborn children from the moment of fertilization'
ACLU of Louisiana advocacy director Chris Kaiser said the measure also would criminalize in vitro fertilization and various forms of birth control by defining a fertilized egg, even before implantation, as a person.
In a statement on Thursday, he called the bill 'barbaric.'
'On his bill to criminalize women who have abortions, Rep McCormick has a new amendment that would allow the AG to intervene if a local DA declines charges,' Kaiser tweeted on Wednesday.
'When we talk about outlawing abortion, we are talking about imprisoning women & girls.'
Louisiana is one of 13 states with a trigger law that would allow the state to immediately ban abortion if Roe v. Wade is overturned.

PRAISE THE LORD!
WONDERFUL.
States generally have four categories for cause of death:
1) Homicide
2) Suicide
3) Accidental
4) Natural causes
Abortion doesn’t fit 3 of the 4.
Yes, Praise Him.
My only worry is that this rush to overturn Roe might enrage the electorate. Most polls show about 60-70% do not want Roe totally overturned. Yes, I know it’s hard to tell which polls are honest.
I am so terrified that this might lead people to vote the congress back into Democrat hands. Yes, I know I’m a worry wart.
Well, the rare spontaneous abortion is generally considered accidental.
Maybe less rare nowadays since more people wait so long to try to have kids.
The democrats will call this democratically advanced legislation an affront to democracy.
“There is nothing democratic about the democrat party.” -Rush Limbaugh
Accidental or natural causes for the spontaneous aka miscarriages; but as for all the rest—definitely not suicide.
Yes that is whatI was referring to. Miscarriages. Or the even rarer ectopic pregnancies. Neither is desired or wanted.
Roe, albeit rewritten via Casey, has been in place since 1973.
Overturning Roe and Casey now is the opposite of that having happened in a rush.
How many states currently ban, or are planning to ban abortions?
How is the manufacturing base there? I am stuck in a lib s hole for the time being. BUT... I don’t like heat. But I do like freedom and babies being born aline.
Move to the suburbs of Baton Rouge (Prairieville is booming) or Northern LA cities like Monroe. I work in logistics and my account is based in LA. Plenty of good-paying jobs in LA. Plus the food. Oh, the food.
Yes, from a technical time period, that is true. I just fear that for the average citizen (with their notoriously short attention spans), it will FEEL sudden.
Perhaps, but changes become the status quo very quickly, with gay marriage being a recent example.
“From the moment of fertilization”
Hope so!!
Plans are already underway to ban abortion at the national level through federal law.
If the American electorate has become so morally vacuous that they dither and hedge over infanticide we are already lost as a nation. Having the congress in the hands of democrats becomes merely a symptom, not the disease.
