An advocacy group is urging the Justice Department to investigate Pennsylvania Senate candidate Mehmet Oz for doing work for Turkish Airlines without registering as a foreign agent — but Oz says he just made a couple of videos.
The celebrity doctor is featured in promotional videos shown to passengers of the airline, which is 49.12 percent owned by the Turkish government, according to a 2015 FARA filing by public relations firm Golin/Harris.
“Dr. Oz clearly serves as a foreign agent on behalf of the foreign principal Turkish Airlines,” Armenian National Committee of America executive director Aram Hamparian wrote in a letter Tuesday demanding that assistant attorney general Matthew Olsen launch an inquiry.

David Laufman, who oversaw the Justice Department’s FARA enforcement from 2014 to 2018, told The Post he would not immediately dismiss the complaint.
“I think it would be appropriate for [the Justice Department] to undertake logical, analytical and investigative steps to determine whether Dr. Oz acted as a public relations counsel or publicity agent in the United States on behalf of Turkish Airlines,” Laufman said. “If he did, he likely would have an obligation to register unless he qualified for an exemption.”

Trump picking this this guy to support is indeed baffling, to say the lest. But Trump has chosen pretty strange folk in his day. And some of them have come back to bite him.! He needs to be more careful, and question his advisers..

Almost every candidate has serious flaws, so you have to pick the best of the lot, until we start getting better people to run for office.

That law is intended to address working for foreign GOVERNMENTS, not foreign businesses.

I’m not a fan of the turk, but I’m not sure that the foreign agent registration laws were intended to prevent celebrities from making commercials for a company that some other country has a minority ownership interest in.
China has an interest in lots of companies. If we go down this rabbit hole, how many other celebrities would be caught up, I wonder?

I don’t trust Oz, but I am hoping that if he wins, he realizes his reelection chances will still hinge on Trump’s endorsement, and at least be restrained by that. Specter, etc, didn’t have that type of restraint on their behavior.

The legal question merely asks - did you get paid. If he did, then he was a foreign agent, if not then he wasn’t.
Now then, Oz does seem like possibly hundreds of others who are ignorant of the law when they do such things. But if you want to be a Senator, wouldn’t you hope to be better informed about the laws regarding personal activities that benefit a foreign sate power.
