George Will points to Hawley while arguing senators should be barred from presidency

Longtime Washington Post columnist George Will says the Constitution should be amended to bar senators from running for president, specifically pointing to Sen. Josh Hawley.

“The 328 senators of the previous 50 years have illustrated the tyranny of the bell-shaped curve: a few of them dreadful, a few excellent, most mediocre,” Will wrote in the Post on Wednesday. “Although Josh Hawley, Missouri’s freshman Republican, might not be worse than all the other 327, he exemplifies the worst about would-be presidents incubated in the Senate.”

The fact that we have only had 328 senators over the past 50 years shows the problem with career politicians. That comes out to a little over 6 senators per state over a 50 year period. Considering you get 2 per state it means every senator serves about 3 terms or 18 years.

Better yet how about we just repeal the 17th Amendment and get back to the original intent and design which enabled some outstanding people to become Senators.

I remember reading three or four decades ago that Senators make the worst presidents because, in the Senate, they are one of a hundred, it’s easy to hide, and that does not build executive skills or character.

That’s precisely why President Trump was so successful against such staggering odds and why they had to destroy him.

He lost all his credibility right there.

“The 328 senators of the previous 50 years have illustrated the tyranny of the bell-shaped curve: a few of them dreadful, a few excellent, most mediocre,”

I'm sure Will includes Obama in the "excellent" category.

Will went past his expiration date decades ago.

She should point to the two previous democrat Presidents that used to be Senators as prime examples.

I’m surprised he didn’t include governors since that’s where the Republicans tend to have their strongest bench. And on Senators, I have to admit he may have a point. Think of Kennedy and LBJ, and then imagine the damage Al Gore (former Senator and son of another) and John Kerry would have done. Joe Biden, Senator from Delaware before becoming Obama’s Butt Boy, point made. Hire executive experience (military and private sector preferred) for the chief executive and keep the legislators far away from real individual power.
