Paris (CNN) — Emmanuel Macron has won France's presidential election, fending off a historic challenge from far-right candidate Marine Le Pen during Sunday's runoff vote.
Macron took 58.55% of Sunday's vote, making him the first French leader to be reelected in 20 years. He and Le Pen advanced to the runoff after finishing in first and second place, respectively, among 12 candidates who ran in the first round on April 10
While the contest was a rematch of the 2017 French presidential runoff, much of Europe watched the election with unease. A Le Pen presidency would have fundamentally changed France's relationship with the European Union and the West, at a time when the bloc and its allies rely on Paris to take a leading role in confronting some of the world's biggest challenges -- most notably, the war in Ukraine.
And though Macron's pitch to voters of a globalized, economically liberal France at the head of a muscular European Union won out over Le Pen's vision for a radical shift inward, the 41.45% of people who voted for her put the French far right closer to the presidency than ever before.
Le Pen's performance is the latest indication that the French public is turning to extremist politicians to voice their dissatisfaction with the status quo. In the first round, far-left and far-right candidates accounted for more than 57% of the ballots cast.
Many of those unsatisfied witthe final two candidates stayed home. The voter abstention rate for the runoff was 28%, according to the French Interior Ministry, the highest for a runoff since 2002.

That usually happens in French elections. The same for Israeli elections. The same for elections in the United Kingdom.
Exit polls work better when you don't have 350 million people and the 3rd largest nation by geography in the world.
People will whine and b&*th about election fraud as usual but the truth is fraud is baked in by default for a rightwing candidate to overcome. The French right simply doubled down after lepen’s first loss and repeated what they did last time without asking themselves what about the infrastructure embedded and deeper reasons in society that allows the left to maintain control against the narrative. Nothing will likely change if all you do is whine about swimming against a current and then repeat the same thing next time. Same thing for Trump. People complain incessantly about fraud in 2020 but their big brained idea is do the exact same thing and run him again and hope things will be different next time. You don’t win elections simply by focusing on elections but on winning the wider culture war.
Still, Marie La Pen did much better than in 2017.
France should be ruled by Marion Maréchal.
The last sentence is true because she loved money.
Heh
Many think this guy is primed to be the leader of the New World Order. Some say he may be the coming Antichrist from a revived New Roman Empire.
